<P>The pictures of the boys on the beach illustrate rather nicely an often over-looked cultural difference between this region and North America.</P> ; <P>At one extreme, in North America, body space is a symbol of masculinity. Boys learn early to maximize their distance from other people, especially other males as much as possible and feel <EM>extreme </EM> discomfort when forced into close quarters with other males, for instance on public transit. Given an unconfined space, they will often choose to stand far apart and shout as opposed to being close to a guy that they are presumably <EM>friends </EM> with.</P> <P>In vietnam, body space is a symbol of social reject. Body space between friends is absolutely zero. To them, a friend's body is like an extension of their own body. As long as it doesn't hurt, its just assumed that he can touch you anywhere. Very disconserting for someone that grew up in North America.</P> ;
