All these pictures here were taken by me (Rowena). For those of you who are not familiar with Intramuros, here's a little information about the place: It is the oldest part of Manila. Centuries ago, Miguel Lopez de Legaspi defeated Raja Sulaiman and began the construction of Fort Santiago on the ruins of what was once Maynila. Intramuros means "city within the wall" and that is what it once was: the living quarters for the Spanish aristocracy, the religious orders and some mestizos (half Spanish, half Filipino.) For over two hundred years, Intramuros was a formidable fortress which neither the Dutch nor the Portuguese ever succeeded in conquering. During World War Two, Intramuros was almost completely destroyed, but the bulk of the structure has been rebuilt and more is on the way. Thanks for visiting here. Rowena
