  • David Great shots of Mt Hebo. I was stationed there from 1963 thru 1968, worked T-2Maint, lived in Tillamook for awhile, then a farm house outside of Hebo, until I was told to move into Base housing, across the street from the Commander, as an AIC, managed the Bowling alley and the Central Base Fund for recreation equipment, left for nicer location at Fort MaArthur in California. • Was stationed with 689th AC&W Sqdn from January of 1956 thru November 1959. At the time I was discharged had more time on "the Hill" than anyone there! Worked PT at KTIL as announcer and ran the Information Services Section which consisted of the Rec Building, Library, all AFSC Testing and other stuff. Also administered GED and USAFI Testing as well as produced the Squadron Historical Report and handled PR for the Squadron. Really enjoyed my stay and will try and get off some pictures to you for possible inclusion on this site. Our home is in Medford, Oregon and we have a vacation home west of Tillamook between Netarts and Oceanside. Feel free to drop me a line if you like. Van Sias

  • Good morning, Dave, It is great looking at your pics. I noticed Tom Graham's comments. I too was at Mt. Hebo in 1957 and 1958. We had some VERY INTERESTING times back in them cold war days. Do you have contact with anyone else from these years? Chuck Jeronimo

  • My brother-in-law, Fred Schmit, was stationed at Hebo, Oregon back in 62. We didn't get to go in and see anything, however I remember the drive up there. Thanks for posting all this, I'll try to get it emailed to my niece, his oldest daughter. Kathy

  • Enjoyed the pictures very much. Station Mt Hebo, Nov64-Nov65 then shipped to Korat Ab Thailand. Duty in site commcenter/switchbrd in ops. Lived in small house in Coverdale, near a school. Believe a Maj. O'Reilly was CC then. After I departed, my uncle, SSG L.Leonard, reassigned from Portland IAP, worked motor pool and ran site service club. Enjoyed area, people and site even if for short time.. Ed Leonard, CMsgt Ret.

  • Hello, my name is Tom Graham and I made an error in listing the opening of Mt. Hebo AFB. We opened the base in Sept. 1956. I left thwere in Oct. 1957. When I was at Hebo, there was only a sporting goods store, a grocery store and a small inn there. There were 220 airmen on the base.

  • Dave, We were just up on Mt. Hebo last weekend and I was trying to explain how things used to be to my kids. This is so awesome, I can just show them!!!! Wow, these pictures sure bring back memories. We used to go up with my parents and visit Charlotte Finnel, who used to cook for the boys up there. She let us kids run through some of the wind tunnels! What fun! I grew up in Sandlake, so can relate to the places others are sharing in their memories of that area! Fun times! thanks! Mylene

  • Hi Dave, My Name is Mike Blaney, I was Stationed on Mt Hebo from '73 to '75. I really enjoyed the photos, and was stunned to see the Mount before and after being "...returned to Nature.." I have a lot of great Memories of that Base. I repaired the AN-FPS27A Search system shortly after it was installed. I remember Hebo very well, the bar that was "Crackers" and the coffe shop on the corner where a bottomless cup of coffee was 10 cents. The Dory Lounge in Cloverdale. Pacific City Hang Gliders, Sandlake drag races in the dunes. Thanks so much for the photos and a stroll down memory lane.

  • Mr. Casteel, my name is Jerry Smith. I'm Gerald Smith's son. I was born in Tillamook during the 4+ years my dad was stationed there. I always enjoy looking at old photos of Mt. Hebo. I got to go back with dad in '84 as they were tearing it down. I have a scoring pad from the bowling alley & a sign from the playground in the housing area. Even though there were fences up, dad & I snuck in & wandered around up at the radar site & the housing area. We even got into our old house. I don't know how many of dad's Hebo buddies are aware, but dad passed away on March 22nd. If you or anybody would like the link to dad's obituary & guest book, feel free to e-mail me or my mom, Ruth. Mt. hebo will always be a special place to me, as it was to my dad. Thanks for the great pictures, Dave. Sincerely, Jerry Smith (Gerald B. Smith's son) studmfn63@aol.com

  • My name is Claude Merry, I was stationed at Mt. Hebo from Dec '61 until Sep '62. I was NCOIC for sometime of the AN/FST-2 section and turned the section over to MSGT Peterson when he arrived. I remember you and do believe you wrote a performance report on me before I left. I have really enjoyed the pictures, I left before the FPS-24 was completed but did learn of it's demise. I reviewed the pictures of the reunion but it has been too long and I didn't recognize anyone. Thanks again for affording me the opportunity to relive some of my days at Mt. Hebo. Best wishes. cmerry@mailblocks.com

  • Hi Dave, Great to see someone preserving history. Great web site Dave ! I was a Philco tech rep at Mt. Hebo in the early 60's. I came to Mt. Hebo from the site at Neah Bay, washington. I have a few photos from Mt. Hebo and Neah bay but they were taken off site, cameras were frowned upon :>) Here is a link to my ship's web site, not as nice and elaborate as yours Dave but it's kinda new :>) Also for the folks interested in the Navy they can do a Google search for the " Tin Can Sailor " web site, a site dedicated to the Destroyer ( Tin Can Sailor ). http://www.geocities.com/ipapatuck/ Thanks for the web site dave !!
