  • Wow! I love your pictures, they bring back many beautiful memories of Spang and Bitburg. My family was there from 70-76, I graduated high school there in Bitburg. We loved it there, it was so beautiful. I am from the class of 75. If anyone lived there during this time, please contact me. Thanks again for the pictures.

I have some pictures of the housing-aria from that period and I was wondering if you are interested in them. If so please let me know.

  • Stumbled on to this site and found it very interesting. Was at Bitburg 77 - 82. Sure can remember those 3 - 4 days alerts with chemical suits. Like the pictures, and still can remember the wine and "Bit" beer.

  • How cool is this. I just found this site by accident. My name is Ed and was stationed at Spang from 1969-1972 23rd TFS weapons loading. I have many great memories there and this site has helped me to remember a lot. I made many great friends that I have lost contact with over the years. I lived of base in Bitburg at 66 wittlecher Srasse for a couple of years. If anyone wants to contact me , do it.

  • I found this site while I was searching the web. I was stationed at Bitburg 1969-1973 in the 336MMS and I was surprised at how much was still the same. Except now the buildings are brighter. They were all OD when I was there. I enjoyed the walk thru time with these photos. dbard1969

  • I don't know what happened to the previous comment--Bitte ein Bit!!I was stationed there 76-78 and assigned to the Dental Clinic. I lived accross the street from the hospital and remember the walk to the BX/Theater through base housing. I used to go to Harky's, next door to the hospital dorm. Thanks for the memories--they were great times including the trips to "Lux City"

  • Really enjoyed seeing these pictures of Bitburg - a time to reminisce! I was stationed there from 1966 to 1969. It was a wonderful time of enjoying the food, the people and opportunities to travel around Europe. The weather was the only dismal part of my experience! Although it was a beautiful emerald green when it wasn't raining! Would love to hear from anyone there when I was...bbhume@verizon.net

  • My father was stationed at Bitburg in the late 60's early, 70's. We had temporary housing in Spangdahlem and then on to Trier. Mom shopped in Bitburg and my brother was born there, too. Seeing these pictures brings back a lot of memories. I have always wanted to go back and visit. Seeing these pictures has made that visit possible. Thanks.

  • WOW, I was a dependent at Bitburg '87-'90, this has brought back so many memories and I am amazed at how Bitburg has been so special to us who were based there, luckily I understand. I met so many fab people there as did my son Daniel. Daniel was 5-8 and we lived in building 17 by the main road and the football pitch. I volunteered at Social Actions and my X hubbie was a firefighter. I come from Scotland and would love to hear from anyone who remembers me or my son, his best friend was a girl named Erika, she is the same age as Daniel and lived in bldg 17 as did Shamina, too many to name. I would be interested in hearing from a guy from 36th CES who came from a town near Chicago, I cant remember his name but we were friends, I think it's Isley (last name). keep enjoying the photo's guy's. • My father was stationed in Bitburg in the fall of 1970, and then he was stationed in Spangdahlem later in I believe 1971 (fuzzy time frame, as we lived in Spangdahlem Base Housing). He set up the finance office when Spangdahlem was breaking away from Bitburg. I went to 7th grade part of the year in Bitburg and the rest of the year (after we got the housing) in Spandahlem. I did 8th grade in Spang and 9th grade at Bitburg High School. We left in August of 1973. The building we lived in was 420 stairwell A-5. There are a lot of wonderful memories of our time in Germany.......anyone other brats who lived there at that time, it would be great to hear from!

  • Hey all, I was at bitburg from 89 to late 90 and I was wondering if anyone had any current pics of the old mace site that was later a vulcan/chapparal site and if they would post them. I still remember the times I had in bitburgerland... stoobies of Bit, "Your Place or Mine" and just walking down the street. Thanks, Frenchie Bitte ein Bit!

  • Oh geez! This sure brings back some memories. I was stationed there 75-76, and everything then was green (bldgs), I remember the NOC Club rather well ;), I lived right across the street from it, but don't recall the bldg number for sure. I was in Avionics in ECM, workign on the F-4's and other A/C that would come in occassionally. I remember the fire stationed you showed, and the movie theater, and, IIRC, the mess hall was right up the street. Was it really that many years ago????? Thanks so much for the trip back!

  • It was so good to see these pictures, sure has changed since I served at BITBURG 84-89. I was in the 36 EMS Corrosion Control (Paint Barn) and Aircraft Washrack. It was my best tour and a big part of my life, I hope to make it back soon. I will never forget my TDY to Deci and my ride in 79-0022. Best people I ever had the honor of serving with. • Amazing! After all these years, I could still recognize some of the pictures, especially the housing area. We lived there '62-65 when I was 6th-8th grade. Before moving on-base we lived in Minden (just down the road from Echternach). The house we lived in had bullet holes, and we used to play in blown-up bunkers. When we moved into base housing, we lived in 16-F-3 near the entrance. When not in school, we were at the bx or movie theatres. Tickets were 15 cents for kids and 25 for adults. I'll never forget being in the theatre when they stopped the movie and announced that JFK had been assassinated. I also remember the base going on alert many times during the Cuban missle crisis. One day they waited until school was out before sounding the alert, but they didn't realize that some kids were still at school for band practice. We were stuck there for quite a while before being "rescued." Thanks for the pictures and the memories. It was a unique childhood!

  • These pictures are TOO COOL. My dad was stationed at Bitburg from 72-75 worked at the 36th TFW Chief Of Maintenance. I went to the old high school there, when we left, the new high school had already opened up. We lived in Building 11-A-3, I saw my bedroom window in the shot of the backside of building 11. Brought back a lot of memories. THANK YOU

I was assigned to the 36th Tac Hospital, where I worked as an Emergency Room Technician. Have wonderful memories of friends made, places I went, and the fun I had. I lived across the street from the hospital, in the only barracks located off base at the time. Used to love going to Harky's Gausthaus (sp?) Does anyone else remember going there. We lived in Rusdorf and Bitburg Housing # 2-D-2, moved out when it became TLF and into 20-F-3 until we left. Thanks again, but now I'm homesick.

Saw many of the same things you did, like trip to England albiet 50 years earlier. We were 33Ks up toward Belgium Border from Bit. Scrambled fighters outa Bit, Spang, Hahn etc. to intercept unidentified bogies in the ADIZ on the east west border. In those days F-102s and F104s. Nice to see allk this stuff again. Could go for a nice Bitburger pils.

  • Thank you so much for posting such beautifully detailed pictures of the area! I'll be moving there with my fiance (then to be hubbie) in just a few months - since he's already there he does his best to explain what it's like but I'm afraid his best description has been "it's humid..." =) Living my whole life in california and arizona the idea of germany seemed very daunting but these pictures have really help to make me more comfortable with the whole idea! I searched high and low to find pictures of housing and the nearby towns so that I would at least know a little about the place I'd be calling home for the next 3 or so years of my life and these have by far been the best. They've helped to fend off a little of the fear of moving overseas, thanks again! I can't tell you how much these wonderful pictures have down to calm my mind...

  • Man this stuff really brings back some memories! Thank you so much for sharing. I was stationed at Spangdahlem from '88-'91 where I was a crew chief on a F4G - Wild Weasel with the 7081st TFS (later became the 81st TFS) at the bottom of the hill. We used to love to eat a Mom's in Spang Town and I lived in Badem. I used to love driving in that area; the drive into the base or over to Bitburg (to the McDonald's to get a QPw/C) because it is such a beautiful area. Some of the best memories of my life were created right there in that area. If you have more pics of Spangdalem I would love to see them. Your albums are truly awesome, thanks again for sharing and for the trip down memory lane.

If you go back, I'd love it if you could take pics of Buildings 36(the far left stairwell, 4th floor is where we lived) and Building 48 the middle stair well, 2nd floor is also where we lived. I sure would love to go back, now that we have children to share places. There is a Bakery Just up the street that makes the most delicious sandwiches! We were there from Jan 94 to Jan 97. Tara

  • Thank you so much. My heart is aching for all the wonderful times we had in Grmany from 83-87. My husband was stationed at Bitburg. We were raising our 3 daughters, they went to school at the elementary school on Bitburg. We lived in Irrel the whole 4+ years we were there. Actually we went to the Stausee and stayed in a bungalow until we found our house in Irrel. The exchange rate was real good 4dm-1$ so it was affordable to live off base. That was great because we were able to soak up a lot of the culture. We lived on the main street; when you got off the highway on the left a big pink (at the time) house. We built a big snowman one winter and dressed it up as a cowboy and the neighbors got a big kick out of that. We attended a small church, Emmanuel House, down on the Fusgang of Bitburg. The Pastor still has the church, his name is Dieter Bahr, and he lives in Bollendorf which is the town on the German side of that border crossing you were talking about. The river is the border line between Germany and Luxembourg, Echternach being in Lux. Well anyway so many memories and I really hope we get to go back some day. Thanks for posting pics that relieve all our concerns that nothing we remember would still be the same! God Bless YOU!

  • Even after 40+ years things at Bitburg look sooo familiar too me. I noticed the bins that used to be on the front of the buildings are gone. They were used to store coal which was for our heating. But of course things have changed for the better. Well some things. :) And found out we didn't live in Wiesbaden before housing. It was a place called Echternach. And that is where the border was with guards that crossed over a river. We lived across from a meat market on a narrow street that I believe was brick or stone of some sort. Used to watch them bring skinned critters in on their shoulders. My sister and I used to be so bad. :( We would visit the Cathedral near by and snitch the fountain coins to buy Gummi Bears. :) Shame on us. I have never tasted any candy as good as what they had over there. Makes my mouth water. :)

My dad and my family was stationed in Bitburg 1970-1974 I think Building 48 is to your direct left at this intersection facing up the hill? We lived in 48 a-2 for those 4 years. • I am sitting here with tears rolling down my face. I lived at Bitburg in the late 50's for 3 years with my parents and 3 siblings. I have always wanted to see the area again and was afraid to because I just knew so much had changed. But that theater looks so much like the one I went to as a child. And I recognized the housing...we lived in the set of buildings that had the only hill for sledding...it was actually the road leading down into the complex but it was sure a blast. I would have loved to have seen that again but always afraid it would erase the memories I had. I remember two black stone objects straight out into the field as you came into the complex...we would climb into the pipes and crawl through them...dangerous I am sure now...but hopefully those were not for sewer at the time. UGHHH! My father worked at the hospital and stayed in the military for 30 years. They are now retired and living in Florida. He's now 80 years old. I remember once I play hookie from school and he opened the hospital door and asked what I was doing. I fibbed and said we were on a field trip. I had a jar just filled with what I remember to be June Bugs. When we first moved there we lived in Wiesbaden...my school bus was a Volkswagen van. There was a gate with guards that we had to pass through on our way to Wiesbaden I believe over a fast moving river...a river I will never forget but thanks to my sister I am still alive today after a slip. I remember during the night having to go into the basement of the building which was used for family storage...it was for air raid warnings and testing I believe. I remember hearing the sirens going off. My parents said that usually last for an hour and then we were able to go back upstairs to our homes. These pictures have me so emotional but I thank you so very much for posting them. I am saving them and will share them with my family. You've made me so very happy. With heartfelt thanks...Cindy

  • Like the others I also stumbled upon your site by accident. Was at Bitburg from 83 to 87, our son was born at the base hospital. During our tour there it was home to the 22nd, 53rd and 525 TFS. Your photos sure brought back lots of very pleasant memories. Thank you for putting up your site. Dave

  • I was so thrilled to find your photos. Thanks so much for a stroll down memory lane. I was stationed at Bit (labor and delivery nurse for 2 years 1988-1990) and loved every minute of it. Some things have not changed, but many things have. Thanks again for taking me back.

  • WOW !! This brought back some great memories. I didnt think I would get to see my old barracks again (Army area), but you showed the road and the actual building I lived in from 92 - 94 when we were moved to Hanau due to the drawdown. This was my first assignment out of boot and it is still very special to me. Thank you.

  • I lived there from 1990 until sept 1994 (when they closed the base). I was only 11 then, but i really missed that place. I remembered back then I was so pissed off that the air force closed bitburg and left spangdalem open. It looks like not much has changed; I lived in bldg 36 (of the housing area) and I can still remember running to the burger bar in the bx area. it would take me about 6 minutes to get there if i ran. thanks for the memories.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I was stationed at Bitburg AB 1988-1990 and seeing these pictures brought back so many wonderful memories. It was one of the best times of my life and it is so good to know that most of the buildings are exactly as they were 15 years ago. Thanks again!

  • Hi, I found your website by accident - just looking for pics of Bit hospital, my son was born there, need them for the scrapbook- and was so excited to see your pics and made me realize how much I miss Germany and Bit/Spang. We just got home in June 2004. Funny, Carmen (cars1979s) and I are best friends, and she's never told me about your site, great minds think alike, I guess... Anyway, thanks for the great pics, we were there for 3 years and didn't think to take some of the ones you have on here... I've sent a link to alot of our family so they can actually see some of the things my husband and I told them about.... Take Care!

  • I was stationed in Bitburg in the early 90's, was there until they closed it. So did they reopen it or combine it with Spang? And that building you say is a hotel now (used to be Army) - is correct. It was an Army site, that was there barracks and they had a small mess hall. Please respond, love looking at the pictures, brings back great Air Force memories. Take care! Sharlene
