    • Interesting hike. The first part of the Sturtevant trail from Chantry Flat was along and through a forested canyon area, beside summer dried streams and winter water-fall areas, through the lovely Hoegee campground area on a nice hike up to an unexciting and uneventful Mt. Zion. It was overgrown with Chapparal at the top, and about the only interesting view was that of Mt. Wilson. The descending hike into Sturtevant Campground...a beautifully run and meticulously maintained Methodist Church sponsored area with cottages, main lodge, running water and lots of other residential campground amenities was very different from the first part of the hike. Sturtevant Camp was empty so we enjoyed the area and had a swing in the huge swing. From here it was down into Santa Anita Canyon along trails that followed a nice stream. It was mostly forested had a nicely maintained trail, more than adequate camping and picnic areas and facilities, and eventually meandered through an area of old summer camps...still quaint, colorful, and well maintained. We finished the hike with a fairly long steep stretch of very sunny paved road into Chantry Flat. The first part of the hike was somewhat challenging, the backside was relaxing, cool, and most enjoyable. We stopped several times on the back side to enjoy the area and its peacefulness and beauty. Except for two young men passing us in the opposite direction from us at Hoegee Camp, we saw no one until we got to the very last mile of the hike...close to Chantry Flat.
