This hike was an easy hike along a two-lane fireroad amid some of the best views of the San Gabriel Mts. from the San Gabriel Mts. The road was a plus today...concentration could be shifted from focusing on where our feet were being placed on a narrow trail to being able to fully enjoy the views with little concern for falling or sliding. Old Baldy (Mt. San Antonio) loomed over us for about two thirds of the hike. It wasn't visable from the lower parts of the Glenwood Ridge fireroad. The views of Mt. Ontario and Cucamonga to the south-east were spectacular, and we could see north-northwest all the way to the end of Cow Canyon to the Hawkins string of mountains 26 miles north of Azusa, Mt. Wilson, Lookout Mt. in front of Baldy...and Baden-Powell . The valley of smoke was "cloudy" ; and Santiago in the Santa Ana's was barely visible. The top of Sunset Peak is used as a helicopter practice landing area. A chopper landed several times while we were in the area...it veered away from landing when we were at the peak...where there is a huge helicopter landing pad made of corrugated roofing panels..we had no idea what it was until we saw the copter land.
