Album Description:
In the 17th and 18th century gable stones were used in lieu of house numbers. They can tell you something about the original owner of the house. These pictures were all taken in the 'Jordaan' quarter of Amsterdam.

I love the photo's of Amsterdam, the stones, the birds, etc. I am assuming you are dutch or else spend a lot of time there. We had a very good friend, now diseaced, who was from just outside of Amsterdam and we long to take a trip to Holland at some point in time. Keep shooting the great images. Gary Capen

What a great idea.I always assumed that these stones were to do with the trade of the people that worked from a particular building. Thanks for putting me right on that one.I just love Amsterdam and have often seen these stones on the building. I didn't realise that there were so many of them though. Thanks for sharing. Craig from Scotland

Thank you for writing in my guestbook and congratulating me on my featured album From the Sea. What I like most about receiving a feature is the opportunity to hear from fellow members from all over the world and therefore be directed to their albums. I truly do love the beach and know how fortunate I am to live so close to it.

Hoi Hanna Thanks for sharing this collection of gablestone. I have taken a lot a pictures of them in the past, while travelling in The Netherlands - never as pretty though. I enjoy very much to observe what a skilled photographer, with a good camera and plenty of time to take pictures (all of which are not necessary available when you are "on the go"!) could make out of it. Lucky you to live in Jordaan! About the "Funny bird", pic no 82 of 100, page 6, try looking at it while bending your head 45 degrees to the right. Doesn't it look like a very surprised donkey to you? Hanna this is most exquisit serie of photos, I have seen it before but sometimes because of time or the strange manner of Webshots behaving I did not leave you a comment. Well here it is : just wonderful and very instructive. Lots of hugs/kathy
