Hmmm, I hate tobacco smoke but I do enjoy the smell of a good cigar tobacco! I bet these barns smells wonderful! I would love to live near one of these and go for a summer walk in the fields to take in the lovely scented air. It is a shame that they exist now as nothing more then relics to a once booming industry.

My father bought and dismantled an old PG County tobacco barn, back in the 70's. Most of the siding is still stacked in his garage and basement. While it's sad these old buildings are slowly passing into history, they should never be allowed to sit and decay away. Each one still represents a fortune in lumber, as aged barn siding is valuable, particularly the unpainted, silver-looking poplar.

Hi again Ken, many thanks for the return gb following your recent feature, seems many on ws do not get round to that in the excitrment of the moment! Thought I would have another look at you & this one caught my eye. Always try to view American barn albums if I can, saw so many in my childhood on the old one reel cowboy films at the saturday morning kids club. Nice work on these barns, fast dissapearing I expect. I was inspired by ws barn albums to do one on English barns, very different from USA barns. That album is on my other name of ericy202 if you care to take a look. Eric

Thanks for these wonderful pictures. Regarding the two barns in Prince George's County, could you tell me where they were taken ? Near what city/town ?

Hi Ken, Great story and beautiful photographs of these barns. I really enjoyed looking at them, and reading your captions. Ontario also has a tobacco growing industry, but I'm not aware of their situation at the present. It would be something worthwhile looking into. Thanks for sharing! Ina in Canada

Hello and greetings from Kentucky. As you may know Kentucky once was a huge tobacco growing state. Nearly every farm had a tobacco barn, many times 2 to 3 or more. Acre after acre as you drove along the highway of tobacco. Today, we still have the barns, but the tobacco fields are nearly gone. I once had a 28000+ burley tobacco base on my farm. Farm after farm was paid for with tobacco. But what few tobacco farmers in Kentucky are left, many are reaching their 60's. It was nice to see the old barns. Thanks for sharing... Darrell

Interesting trip. Peaceful, quite, life in harmony is what your pictures brought to mind. Helen and I have driven through Tennessee and saw the tobacco farms there. However, I don't remember any barns, although they must have had them. I've seen drying racks of tobacco on National Geographic (TV). None of those images seems as peaceful as your picture. Thanks for sharing. Ed/Albuquerque

Hi Ken Thanks for the kind words on my Maine album. I enjoyed looking at your different album's, especially the old barns and tobacco fields. I'm from Skowhegan originally. We just took a day trip up to Acadia this past weekend. It is such a beautiful place. Great photo albums, hope to see more in the future. Daryl/Mainer112

Hi Ken, a few days ago it was you yesterday me, Wonderful a lot of work but wonderful to hear from lots of new people from around this wonderful world of ours. Love the barns, it is always a shame when an old local industry falls apart. a friend of mine toured Nevada and photographed the old derelict mines, such a shame. Glad that somebody like you takes an interest. Keep up the good work Ken

Hi Ken, Thanks so much for stopping by my Family History album. I appreciate your kind words, and I want to encourage you to do as you mentioned with your family history - how fascinating that will be (please let me know when it's up). Love these barns (just happens that I work for the NTHP) and have spent many happy times in So. MD, St. Mary's Co. in particular. When I'm not running so late, I'll stop by to see Point Lookout and think of eating crabs - yum! Thanks and best regards- Lynne from Virginia
