• These are simply stunning photos of a beautiful island. Now if only I could win the lottery and live there permanently - perhaps buying lottery tickets might help! How many people live on Aitutaki? Thank you for your interesting commentary, your superb photos, and for introducing me to this beautiful place. Allie, St. George, Ontario, Canada.

 • Hi Dorottya. Most shots in this album (and those older) were taken with pocket-sized Canon ELPH, a few with cheap, disposable underwater cameras. The photos taken of Canada, New England and Maui were mostly taken with my Konica KD-500Z digital. Have to say though that I don't really like the Konica. It takes good photos but is very slow and pretty delicate. Actually prefer the older ELPH. Ken

 • Hello, I am Dorottya Perenyi from Hungary (Europe). I would like to ask you what kind of camera are you using to make those awesome-beautiful photoes? I have a digicam' Panasonic DMC FZ30 and I have already made some nature photoes from Hungary ang Croatia...etc but I see you have a great sense to show people how the world looks like. Thank you for the adventure! Best regars Dorottya

I'm anxious to read your report about your April trip, but I fear it may not be posted in time. I believe you get back April 22nd and I leave the 30th, right after a busy wedding week. • Margob103: Overall Bora Bora is the most beautiful place I have ever seen (it's very pricey though), followed by Moorea, Rarotonga, Aitutaki, Kauai, Oahu. Of these, Bora Bora is most beautiful because if it's lagoon (island itself is a bit scruffy in areas). Moorea is the most beautiful island itself (it's lagoon is very nice too). Raro is similar to Moorea while Aitutaki's lagoon is somewhat like Bora Bora's laggon. Quietest place I've been is Aitutaki (though by most standards Bora Bora, Moorea, Rarotonga, and even Tahiti (outside of the city of Papeete) are all very quiet. Aitutaki feels VERY, VERY remote and laid-back and really gives you the feeling of being far, far away from everything. Not much to do there though - mainly because you really are far, far away from everthing. Neither Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, Rarotonga, or Aitutaki have any snakes at all. Hawaii has no poisonous snakes but does have a non-poisonous variety that was introduced by someone (no one knows who) not too many years ago that is now devasting the native bird population. Laws in Hawaii actually encourage people to kill snakes on sight as a result. There are no poisonous spiders in any of the locations either (though there are some large spiders - just no poisonous ones). Unlike the Caribbean, there are no scorpions. Only poisonous land creature in any of these islands is the centipede - big, ugly, and with a nasty bite (though not generally deadly). Not a major threat though and you are unlikely to see one unless you root around in dead leaves or other similar hiding places. Turn your shoes upside down and shake them before putting them on. Accomodations may sometimes have bugs (this is the tropics and bugs are hard to totally do away with). Geckoes (small lizards) are very common even in nice hotels. They are happily put-up-with because they eat the bugs. All in all, these islands are one of the safest areas you can go to in regards to land creatures. Ken

 • What do you consider the most beautiful, get away from it all, ideal beach location where peace and quiet reigns supreme? Also, where there are no snakes or huge bugs in accommodations. My email address has changed to: m1935argo@sbcglobal.net Your photos are magical. Margo Barr

Keep in mind however, that the "high altitude" album cover photos were taken by Ewan Smith (and used with his permission), a well-known local photographer (and one of the owners of Air Rarotonga).

 • Got your guestbook entry. Couldn't find your email either here or on epinions and didn't still have it in my address book. Don't know if you remember but I contacted you regarding Cooks awhile back. Almost got there again. Had my travel companions almost convinced but then we ran into a travel agent who had some atrocious pics of Raro which turned my friends off. Too bad. Could have shot the travel agent! Will get there some day. But your message caught me 4 sleeps before I'm off to Akumal area of Mexico! Two week stint at Kantenah Palladium. Local radio station has trip contest for 10 days at Edgewater in Raro. Been thinking of trying for it.. Bali was amazing. A friend is going there in 9 days, so will hear updates from him. Very cheap. Entire trip, airfare, hotel, meals, tours (6), souvenirs taxes, etc was $2300 (Cdn). Really cheap to eat there. Singapore Airlines phenomenal.

 • Thanks for the incredible pictures and epinions review of Rarotonga and Aitutaki. My wife and I went to both islands in April 2003 (before reading epinions) and while we knew when we got there that we had made the right decision, your reviews reaffirmed it. We stayed at Palm Grove on Raro and Are Tamanu on Aitutaki and can attest to the islands being every bit as beautiful as your pictures show. There’s no doubt in my mind that we would have dropped twice the money spending a couple weeks in Hawaii or French Polynesia. Thanks again. Your spared me the trouble of writing the perfect review and posting all my pictures.

We are doing an around the world trip and this will be our last stop. We are visiting Moorea again which we loved and we have previously been to rarotonga. My dream is to visit Bora Bora but it is a little pricey for us and now that I have seen your photo's of Aitutaki and the lagoon I think we have made the right decision. • By all means go to Aitutaki, even if all you can spare is a single day. It is truly amazing. Be sure and take a lagoon tour as the lagoon is the main reason for visiting the place. I understand that normally you do not have to book your trip there (from Raro) too far ahead (though we did), but since you are going in December (the Holiday season) you might want to do so just to make sure you can get on a flight.

 • Hi Ken, WOW! THANK YOU so much for sharing your photos. I feel like we have been there with you! Your reviews on eopinions are tremendously helpful in our trip planning to the Cook Islands too! We were planning a trip in December to Rarotonga and I had a question for you...is it advisable to do a day trip to Aitutaki and would we need to reserve a flight from the US or can we hop on when we get there? We cant really afford to deviate from our package and stay overnight there...would a day be sufficient to take a look around? THANKS!!!

 • To Orlyyahalom - Yes I know the spelling is different from THE Lord Balfour (to a certain degree responsible for the founding of your country). That's because it's not a reference to THAT Lord Balfour, but rather a fictitious character in a fantasy story I've been working on. The fact is, I like the name but felt it really is a great name for a really nasty villian (a necromancer actually - no offense meant towards THE Lord Balfour). Anyway, back in the days when I first started using the internet (AOL), I couldn't use my real name because all the variations were already taken. So in frustration, I Choose the name of the character I was trying to develop at the time. The name just stuck. I've been LordBalfor ever since.

However, they do cheer up my desktop and my screensaver beautifully. • To vickyutah: Ah yes, Polynesian Fever - a very powerful addiction - and there is NO cure. Once you go, you have to return. Bora Bora did the same to me - hence our trip to the Cooks. Aitutaki is almost as beautiful as Bora Bora (all it lacks the massive central mountain - and the overwater bungalows) but is much, much cheaper. It's a bit cooler in the winter however.

 • To loulag: Actually, there seemed to us to be quite a few shells of some nice varieties and even some very nice (and fairly large) chunks of coral laying about at the high-tide mark (especially on Aitutaki) - though an acquaintance who'd been to Fiji said they were much more plentiful and varied there.

 • Your photos have inspired me to find a way to travel to the islands. I didn't see many shells on the beaches and am wondering if being inside a lagoon precludes the shells from washing ashore. Thanks for sharing, and many happy travels to the two of you!

 • I did check out Morenobet's Seychelles photos, which u have recommended. Unfortunately, although they r great (since Aitutaki is great), they seemed cold & aloof sine no humans r in photos! They would have felt more welcoming if he had taken snapshots of people to show, atleast, human scale in relation with the rocks!! I preferred ur family album, it seemed more friendly & realistic & . We were so glad that we took the tour to OneFootIsland...so amazing. We hope to go back in a year or two. Also went to Fiji and stayed at Castaway Island...hope you can get to Fiji one day. Thanks so much for your great photos...as I only took film on our trip. See my fun, theatrical site at www.thedramaschool.com...

 • Hi Patty. The most beautiful place we've been is French Polynesia (specifically Moorea and Bora Bora) - but it is very expensive. The place we like best (considering snorkeling conditions, friendliness of the people and affordablity) are the Cook Islands. Best travel talk site for French Polynesia is at www.tahiti-explorer.com/ while the best site for the Cooks Islands is probably Lonely Planets' Thorn Tree (http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=3). • Ken, Looks like you've been to many exotic blue water islands. Which one would you recommend for the beach all around beaches, & snorkeling? Which travel talk web site for the best real people information. Great Pictures!!! Patty

 • Megan & Seth, there are lots of very cheap places to stay in the Cooks (especially on Raro). Since I'm not sure of your budget, your best bet to finding a good one is to check the Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree message board (http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/categories.cfm?catid=20) or possibly the Jetsave accomodations web page (http://www.jetsave.co.ck/). I'm not sure if you are looking for dormatory facilities or your own cabin/beach batch. You can also feel free to write me directly at LordBalfor@attbi.com. I've limited knowledge of budget accomodations, but I might be able to help a little. By the way, Aitutaki is much more beautiful that it appears in my photos. Ken

 • Hi there! We are two Canadians about to embark on a six-month adventure that commences in February on the Cook Islands (we plan to work in New Zealand afterwards and then use any money we save to travel to Vietnam for a month in July). We have really enjoyed looking at your photos and reading your reviews and we are wondering if you could provide us with any helpful hints for the budget traveller. We plan to stay for one week on Rarotonga and for one week on Aitutaki. Your pictures of Aitutaki make the dazzling lagoon look absolutely irresistable! Any information you could provide regarding budget accomodation, cheap things to do, and how to fly to Aitutaki would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Megan Weekes Seth Montgomery

We just returned about a week ago and had a fantastic time. I realise though that so many of our photos are almost identical to the ones you took, i.e. of One Foot island and at Are Tamanu. When I get around to posting them to the net I will send you the link so you can compare. regards, Scott

Thanks very much. As I brave the minus 30 temps (and that's only the average!) I think about being in the Cooks in the near future.

 • To RandyMac: I didn't use a digital camera. I took most of the photos with an ELPH LT APS camera. The underwater shots and many of the One Foot Island photos were taken with an inexpensive disposable underwater 35 MM camera. When I had the film developed I had Kits Camera put the photos to CD at the same time. Resolution on most shots is 1536x1024. There are several internet cafes on Raro and (I think) one of Aitutaki. I would suspect they have USB ports but I never checked them out so I don't know for sure. Ask this question on the Lonely Planet Travel Board for a definative answer. Glad you liked the photos. Have a great time in the Cooks!

What kind of digital camera are you using and what rez? I just got a 4mega pixel Minolta and plan to post photos to the web so my friends can see back home. Is there a internet cafes with USB ports so I can download the photos or should I bring my portable? Thanx for the view of the great pics.
