  • You'd asked about Ole and Serina Eggen. They're my paterial G-grandparents. I didn't know they were married in Castle town. They homestedded in Absarokee and there is information about them in Mountains of Gold, Hills of Grass, A History of Meagher County, Written and Compiled by Lee Rostad. Bozeman Fork Publishing Martinsdale, Montana 1994. This book could be ordered via your local library, if it is not in stock. What history about their time in Castle town can you share? I didn't know they were married there? What sparked your curiosity abou them? Best regards, Kathryn

  • This one's for Joe Schultz in St Helens who has the family connections to Castle. My great-great aunt was a schoolteacher there, and I'm writing about the place and would love more info. How can I get a copy of your CD? If you see anything in your newspapers about Miss Nora Norris, let me know. I would also love to see any diaries or excerpts from same to give me a sense of daily life there in/around 1889. Email: pibibee@yahoo.com

  • Great shots! I want to visit this area! I'm researching the Ole Eggen family. He met and married his wife, Serina Olsen Gaustad, in Castle town in 1900. I wondered if there might be anything at all about them in the documents or newspapers you found.

  • My great grandfather moved to Castle about 1887 and opened a blacksmith shop. In cleaning out my folks house, I ran across a booklet containing the original ordinances of the Town of Castle. As I opened it, I learned that my great grandfather was on the first city council when the town incorporated in 1891. (I served 8+ years on the St. Helens, Oregon city council.) I also found some old newspapers with stories about Castle. Our family trust still owns the lot where the blacksmith shop was located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Main Street (now county road) and Montana Street (a couple hundred yards south of the interpretive sign). We also still own 5 or 6 lots where their house was located, also on Montana Street, but across the creek and up the hillside to the east about 4 blocks away. I made a 40 minute CD about the great grandfather and history of the town of Castle. Joe Schultz St. Helens, OR.
