What great memories.I went to St. Willy's 63-70, 1st-7th grades. Lived right next to it the year before I started 1st grade. Lived at 111th & Indiana, across from Palmer Park. Grandparents lived across from Ma's. Gately's doughnut maker...

Re: Wisconsin Creamery, thanks for the update. I think I know where it is now. Since it's the only store there's a lot of activity going on there, that's why I've never taken very many pictures of it. I'll look in my collection.

Oops! Sometimes when I put up a link it doesn't always work, so here's the new one. It's not a scam Ron, sorry about that! http://www.associatedcontent.com/user/586016/mare_coogan.html

April 23, 2010: re: DRESSEL's.......on Halsted St in Calumet Park. You asked where it was. It was on the west side of 123rd and Halsted, and was a RED Brick Store-Front. When I lived back there, there was an empty lot on the Northwest corner of 123rd & Halsted, with a 2-story tavern (owner's lived upstairs) then a Dry Cleaner's, next door. Then came what several people called "Dressel's", but it was NOT the name of the store, it was just the brand of cakes and bakery goods they carried there. The NAME of the store was "Wisconsin Creamery" owned by an older couple whose 3 40-ish sons eventually ran the store. Then store next door to the south, was operated by another uncle of mine, Ben Graff. He and Aunt Ann owned what we'd now call a "convenience store", basically a competitor to Wisconsin Creamery. Both thrived. Then next, going south, was the American Legion hall, then a used car lot, then Jawor's and then the corner empty lot at 124th & Halsted, across from Cedar Park Lanes. It would be NICE to see pictures of ALL of these building.....next time you're in that area. Ron -- La Mesa, CA. BTW, I don't know HOW I messed up and put "March 31st" on the date in my last posting. LOL.

March 31, 2010: Just DID try that TERRIBLE other site you referred to. Sorry...it's just TERRIBLE. My computer FROZE UP when I tried TWICE to sign up. .............I really hope you re-consider using that "other" site. First, all I could find was 5 or 6 of YOUR PHOTOS, with ONE person responding, dated 10-10-09. Second, there's GOT TO BE a better way for you to update your work. I sure HOPE you give it some thought. -- Ron, La Mesa, CA

April 23, 2010: Just found two other Roseland/West Pullman PHOTO sites.....but I don't think either of is as good as yours has been over the last few years, tho just looking at the postings, I notice NO ONE has posted since my last entry on March 31, 2010..... Guess that THAT's the reason you haven't been ADDING to this site. SORRY to see that. It would be a BIG LOSS to lose your excellent photos and commentary. Guess I'll REGRETFULLY give that other site you mentioned another try.....-- Ron -- Ron

BTW, Just found your article on Jemez Springs, NM. We used to go to the REAL Spring with the kids out in the forest, just above a canyon. We lived just outside Albuquerque in Paradise Hills for several years. GLAD to have moved FROM there. Ron

March 31, 2010: TRIED that LINK "associated content" SEVERAL TIMES over a couple weeks. It ALWAYS says: "Temporarily Unavailble". It it a SCAM or what? Trying to reach it via Google ALSO does not work. What's hapnin'?

I lived on Perry Avenue and attended/graduated from Holy Rosary Slovak and St. Willy's. I remember Mendel bonfires, Old Fashion days on "The Avenue", milk trucks that would stop and give you a hunk of ice on a warm day, green river sodas at Nick's Fat Man, Krapil's sandwiches, Gately's store with the donut machine, and so much more. I live near Chicago, but I haven't been to Roseland in more than 30 years. My family's name is Halleran

Ron, you could open up an acct. and post all your pictures. It doesn't cost anything & very easy to do.

I've always wondered where Dressel's was, I know my dad went there a lot. What was the address?
said mmcoog
The reason I don't have a lot of pics from 122nd & Halsted is there's always a lot of people milling around. I never take any pictures with people in them. I'm not interested in who lives there now.
said mmcoog
Hi Ron, I like to change up the pictures now and then. I still have all the old ones somewhere on my computer. If you want just email me at mesolo2001@yahoo.com and I'll send them to you.

December 22, 2009:...BTW, Unc's drugstore, Emerald Pharmacy WAS that Rexall store mentioned by others on here. You once had pictures of it. I stopped by in Feb, 2008 to see how the inside looked. A "wig" shop, very overcrowded with tiny aisles. Pleasant Asian woman owns it now. It was my first time back in 19 years, since Dad died. Mom died in '87. Left Cal Park in 1982 to move "Out West". Miss the PEOPLE of the Midwest, and as my 20-yr old grandson said 4 years ago, "...Grandpa, where they STILL have values." This was HIS take on the lack of values in "Colly-foe-neeya" (quoth the Governator.) Enough, Ron.....get some sleep.
said calif4ron
Speaking of good memories, my nephew Joe (Oak Lawn)and my son Jeff (Park Forest and Calumet Park) enjoyed it so much and MISS those days, just invited a bunch, all of us from back there -- for Christmas Eve, just like Mom and Dad did in Cal Park till they passed away. Neph Joe is now in Lemon Grove, neph Steve is now in Oceanside, both Calif...their sister Maria (still in Orland Park, IL) will be here w/ her kids, my two daughters: Jill - Upland, CA and Jeannie, ABQ, NM and ex, Nancy -- will all be here for it. First time we'll ALL be together in 27 YEARS, here in La Mesa, CA. 16 of us. Only 2 left in Chgo area..... -- Ron

What do you do with old PIX which are no longer posted on here? My Uncle Henry's drug store: Emerald Pharmacy, has been mentioned by a couple people, as well as Johnny's Hardware, Kingsway, Vi's Truck Stop and Wasilauskas Bakery all on 122nd and Halsted. Unc also owned the medical bldg next door to Johnny's. Doc Avakian, Unc's best bud, had his offices there for years. Uncle Ben had the small grocery next to Dressel's, and Doc Kadlup had a veteranarian office next to Cedar Park Lanes. Lots of good memories back in Cal Park and West Pullman.

Can't believe no one's posted since I last did. It doesn't have a date, just "1 month, 5 days ago". Dumb new system so many blogs are using. Go back to the REAL Day/Date. Today is Monday, Dec 21, 2009... Anyway: I finally DID go down to La Jolla with my Grandson, Matt -- to take those pix I promised. Took over 100. BUT..."mmcoog". ..now I don't know WHERE to send 'em to you. I'm sure you DON'T want to post 'em to Roseland/West Pullman blog. Maybe a few, since it's "Winter in Chicago" and some of you reading this MIGHT just enjoy a little warmth. We heard you got some snow last week or so?
said calif4ron
Steve Jawor: Did you own Jawor's on 124th & Halsted in 1969? My wife and I had our wedding reception there. Ron -- in La Mesa, CA

Yes, it's a sad reminder of what the area has deteriorated into. As bad as it is today, WE saw the writing on the wall back in the late 70's. Remember how bad it was then?

I was born in Roseland and my father was also born in Roseland. I lived in Roseland with my family on 108th and Vernon. I gratuated from Fenger in 1970. We lived in Roseland until 1971. Thank you for posting these pictures. Even though Roseland has changed and it does not look the same, these pictures bring back very fond memories.

This past Sunday I went back to the old Ingersoll Rand building (West 119th St.), unfortunately they tore most of it down. All that's left is a partial wall on the SW side and the old tower. According to the weekend security guard they're going to build houses and possibly a few strip malls. Another Roseland memory gone up in smoke!

Ran across this looking for information on the order of nuns that taught at SS Peter and Paul-what memories it brings back of better times. I grew up at 124th & Halsted - for anyone who remembers, my grandmother ran a little candy store/soda shop on the corner in the front part of our house. The bowling alley was across 124th to the north of us and SS Peter & Paul church was to the south. I went to Nansen from 1963-1965, then SS Peter & Paul from 1965-1972. I actually worked at Kingsway drive-in from 1974-1976. Spent most of my summers swimming at the West Pullman Park pool - I even remember there being girls' swimming days and boys' swimming days - or riding my bike around the park & flying down the hill there. Learned to bowl at Cedar Park Lanes. Ate burgers & drank soda on shopping days at the grill downstairs at Gatelys, also shopped at the Home Store too. My brother Allen (Bordas) went to Mendel (class of 66?) and my sister Diana (Bordas, Jamrog) went to Fenger (class of 62?) My other memories - Gardner's Hardware (122nd/Halsted), the Wisconsin creamery (S of 123rd), The Rexall drug store and Dr Izbitz(sp?) DDS at 123rd, the dress shop across the street from SS Peter & Paul, Vi's Truck Stop (bar & grill just S of 122nd), bacon buns and atomic cakes from Wausilauskis's bakery, quarter movies at the Normal, a junkyard run by a man named Frank near the IC station, the drive-in around 138th/Halsted, and was it Goodman's at 119th & Halsted? Remember the buildings, not necessarily the business names. My dad, Bill Older, had worked at Harvester briefly around the time I was born in 1958. I remember the neighborhood changing-and I also remember realtors actually going door to door encouraging people to get while the getting was good. That was the summer of 1973 in our immediate neighborhood-and most of the people got-wonder what would have happened if so much propaganda hadn't been used. My parents stayed until 79-not without incident tho. Recognize a lot of the family names in this post. Thx for the memories!

Hi calif4ron, for awhile I was only doing a blog, but now I'm doing both. Which reminds me, Calumet Park was right next to where I use to live (126th & Wentworth), I should take some pictures of that area too. If you have any suggestions feel free to pass them on. I'm looking forward to your pictures!

Hey mmcoog: I just CANNOT believe it. About a year ago, I tried to find your PHOTOS of Roseland and West Pullman, but when I went to the site I visited you on, in Nov 2007, it said: "This site either NO Longer Exists OR it has moved." And I couldn't FIND it again. And TODAY, just about two hours ago, THERE IT WAS!!! I'm "calif4ron" -- and I just re-read MY OWN posts of that day. I'm not going to say much more tonight, however, since it's about 2 a.m. here in La Mesa, CA. BTW, I mentioned La Jolla back then and a small park called "Calumet Park" on the bluffs above the Pacific. If you recall (or NOT), I grew up in Calumet Park, IL. Well, THIS TIME, I'm going to head out there (to La Jolla) in a few days and take those pictures and SEND 'em to ya. For now, I'm gonna browse your PIX for a few minutes, then get to sleep. Ron

You are correct, this is on 119th St. just west of Halsted. I think everyone remembers those big iron hammers constantly pounding. Wonder if any of the men working on them went deaf??
said mmcoog
If this is on 118th or 119th St. just west of Halsted then I remember it well. On quiet summer nights I could hear those big iron hammers coming down all the way to our house on 124th and Union, and the rhythm would put me to sleep. We'd pass it on the way west to the Beverly area and see the men working and the fires going molding the steel. DebbyB

Hi Everyone: just an update, on my way to St. Peter & Paul today I noticed they were tearing down the old Ingersoll Rand plant so I decided to stop by and document it. As of April 11, 2009 this is what's left. By any chance did anyone ever work there or had a family member who did? I didn't, but remember going past there a million times. said mmcoog 23 hours ago Delete comment Block this user

Loved the pix, great memories. Lived at 113th & Prairie from '56-64, then moved to 119th & Eggleston till married. Wish we had now what we had then...walked to school (Holy Rosary Irish) through the alleys and gangways; got bag of chips and a YooHoo everyday after school at a small store right across the street from the church; walked to the "Ave" for shopping (my mother loved Three Sisters and I loved Tony's restaurant for the burgers and milkshakes); walked to Palmer Park to play volleyball in the fieldhouse, swim in the pool, or just hang out....and that was when I was in grade school. Had to be in when the streetlights went on. Went to Mercy High School - graduated with Dennis DeYoung's wife, Susi; cruised the "Ave" and counted the number of guys that honked at us; hung out at Giovanni's pizza on 111th; got in trouble with security guards at Gately's cause they thought we were in the store too long and hadn't bought anything (we would spend a whole day there!); went to the Friday night dances at Mendel, and if we could get a ride, went to Carmel's and even St. Sabina's. Roseland was great.

Hey this is for Weepingforwhitey I really dont think you recall or were informed on the big picture of the exodus of the good people of Roseland its a lot more complex than you think there is alot of grey areas that maybe you should explore, I would really like to discuss this with you sometime in the future, I for one am thinking of moving back home into the valley of death with my eyes wide open care to join me.

HELLO AMERICANS,(Paul Harvey RIP)another Great one gone home well on the south side of things I was just down home myself Pullman our first place on entering this great country of ours Langley street across the street from little Langley park still remember the brown patina of the monkey bars and the shiny all American steel slide weeeeeeeeee.taking a break only to shout at the passing locomotives as the engineer leaned out we would shout any chalk any chalk and on a good day which was almost always the engineer would respond by tossing us 2 or three sticks of chalk (white only)and almost to big for our little hands to grasp the chalk the engineer had i think was to mark the boxcars with some trainmans code but anyway that chalk would entertain us for hours thanks to the kindness of some of the pullman engineeers then some years later we moved on up to Roseland.
said bumtowngrayghost
When I drive through Roseland and take my pictures I hardly recognize the place I use to call home, except for a few buildings, like Gately's, the old YMCA on 111th and a few others. I think "wrecked" is an understatement, that's how bad it is.
said mmcoog
Those animals wrecked Roseland the way they've wrecked every other fabric of society they infiltrate. Racist? I think not. All you have to do is walk through Roseland AND OPEN YOUR EYES (if you don't get knifed walking through first, that is). Pictures were spectacular .... and sad.

MM, Really enjoyed your pics, I was born in Roseland in 1957, went to Van Vlissingen, brothers went to Kohn and Fenger, played ball @ Roseland North in 67, when they went to Williamsport and lost to Japan 4-1 in the Little League World Series, what memories. Lived on Forest just N. of 107th, (had to walk up that big hill to school everyday). Swam @ the Y on 111th/State, played ball @ Palmer, fished in the pond @ Mendal, thought I was living large. Our old house is still up, but my cousin's, @ 106th & Perry, is gone. Grandparents lived @ 108th @ South Park, and 107th between Indiana and Prairie, (by the old Hatton warehouse). I get back to the old neighborhood a few times a year, would be nice to see some old friends if possible, Ganzel, Spiscak, Muscarello, Kallas etc. Thanks again

Speaking of Jesse Jackson...does anyone remember back in the 60's when he and his group protested Palisades bowl???
said mmcoog
My parents didn't leave Roseland because they didn't like the new neighbors. They left because the neighborhood was being destroyed, there was violence everywhere, my mom was almost raped in her own alley, and real estate prices were falling because of Jesse Jackson's block busting. My ancestors came from Holland and built Roseland. Selling the house that my grandpa bought and raised his 7 kids in was not an easy decision for my dad to make. However, he did the best he could to ensure the safety of his family. The only racists involved in the destruction of Roseland are Jesse Jackson and his racist Operation Push Coalition.

Dear "noneesweet, It's really sad to read your comments. I and my family lived in Roseland since the mid-50's. It's sad to hear a very biased story from someone who did not live and enjoy the enviorement of Roseland/West Pullman. Racist is your term and not shared by so many of those here on "This site". You are a very confused person(s). I vividly saw the destruction of our once wonderful and blessed neighborhood. Destruction of a wonderfull area is destruction. No concern to maintain this wonderful area, just destruction. PS: Please be careful if you and or your family decide to go into this once beautiful area.

Mary - I have really enjoyed your pictures. I was trying to locate Betty Kreitling and Google brought me to your website. Are you related? Please let me know if you are - e-mail address is Tatroxx@aol.com I lived around the corner and we were best friends for many, many years. Then I went to Loring School for Girls and we lost touch.

Ok, you "kids" are making me feel old - I left Chicago in 1949 to join the Air Force and only occasionally visited Roseland in the following 30 years of service. You "kids" are probably the kids or grandkids of some of my friends I'm trying to locate. Shirley (Red) Ryder, Joey Spoolstra, Mildred Corkery, Joe MacElroy, Celeste Lewen, Anna McManus, Claire Struebing just to name a few. Nice memories just typing the names I haven't thought of in years. I'm probably the oldest of the folks that so very much appreciate what Mary has done for us all. I can almost taste the five cent hamburgers at White Castle. And can still close my eyes and smell the rye bread baking at People's Store. Yes, it was a blessing to grow up in Roseland. Too bad I couldn't raise my kids there. Bob Worn, Pritchett, Texas bobworn@aol.com

Mary.. Thank-You!! I am proud to say I am from the Rose-land community.. I lived at 10924 S. Wentworth Ave.. until 1971, kiddie corner from John Gasperecs corner grocery store.. I was lucky to have my Mom's parents living next to them... My fathers family lived on 118th & 119th across the street from the Peoples Store.. My Grandmother who recently passed away in August'07 was 91 years young.. She would give my brother Kevin and I one dollar and we would cross the street and go to the Peoples store... walk down the stairs to the toy section... wow... they had Barbies, silly putty, colorforms, slinky matchbox cars, whamo bubbles, soakies and fuzzy wuzzy soap!! she would give a list and we would go to the grocery side and hand the list to the lady and she would bag up that list... I do not remember paying for it!! maybe gram had a credit line going.. I do remember getting the salerno cookies and funny face kool-aid... remember getting your School uniforms?? I went to VV for kindergarten and Holy Rosary Slovak thru 5th grade.. My parents went to SLA and Mendel High-School my Dad was a Big football Player at Mendel They were 1956 Grads..Keep sharing memories this is a great place to REMEMBER a special Treasure... Thank you again Denise

Hi Mary!!...I see my brother Jim left you a couple of messages about our family. Yes I was always very good friends with all the guys in Styx...I used to play out with J.Y. at a small club called Harry's in early Oak Forest. He had a group with his younger brother Ricky (who later joined me in Fawn and passed away 7 years ago) called 'Monterey Hand" of which I have film I took of them when they played Kicka poo Creek Rock Fest in late 60's. J.Y. was best man at my first marriage and my son Kris's Godfather. Yes I did meet Robin Zander when I used to play the Wisconsin Dells. He was in a band with a friend Brian called "Two Of Us". We became very good friends and he used to stay at my parents house very frequently. He started out as our roadie and was fired the first night when he showed up an hour after the job ended with our gear. We did let him in the band for a while but because of his on and off trips back to his moms in Rockford and being late...the other guys bounced him and because he was my friend I had to be the one to tell him!..He was very upset at the time but I doubt it bothers him now!!..All my recordings with him were stollen and the only one I have left is a warped cassette of the night my brother spoke of and took at his home.I have a wonderful rendition of Robin singing "To Dream The Impossible Dream"!...I wonder if he would mind me putting it on my "Myspace"..haha ha!!..You can see an old pic of "Styx" on here with some shots of me and J.Y. and more on my roselandrich Myspace site. Funny one..when Styx put out their first album on "Wooden Nickel" J.Y. picked me up and had to see it in "Hegwiech Records"....I also grew up with Artie and Freddie from "Heartsfield" and their first album was also just released..I bought theirs!!! What the hell J.Y. gave me all theirs free anyway!!! Thanks again for keeping Roseland alive.P.S. ..My mom used to get a kick out of watching Rob walk around the house in his red flannel long johns with the flap in the rear!!!...Wish I had a picture of that one now!!!!!

My Wife's parents grew up in Roseland. I know her Mother's heretige there goes back a long wayHere is a photo of her Great Grandfather's beer garden at the corner of 117th and Princeton. This establishment was there before 1897. I know the picnic permit was applied for in 1910, this picture was probably taken shortly thereafter.

Mary, I stumbled on to your excellent gallery while looking for info on West Pullman. Thank you so much for what you have done. While visiting Chicago in the summer of 2005 my Dad, Son and I visited the Harold Washington Library Center. We researched West Pullman in the Archives and found 2 folders containing newspaper clippings dating back to the 1900s. I qonder if anyone else has found any historical information. Again, thank you for the wonderful blast to the past. Rob Hopkins

I of course like just about everyone else is saying a great big THANKS for the memories. My Aunt Sheila Kennealy went to Fenger, 1959. I went to St Margaret's of scotland. We shopped at Gately's and The Fair. My grandma also went to Brainard shops where ever that was in the 1950s. We lived at 96th and Carpenter but we got around even to 95 and western that was shops too. I just recently visited Pullman the hotel is being restored. I had a relative work there at the turn of the century. I love Chg. History so interesting!

Well said! Note: the RLL field was in disarray a few years ago, I believe the Sun Times did a story on it. Sometime after that the alderman of the ward got together some people and they redid the whole thing. Now it looks pretty nice, one of the few places in Roseland that looks taken care of.

Holy Smoke! What an incredible collection of pictures. I lived at 12154 Eggleston from 1960 thru 1970, when we were among the first to leave. So, so sad. My family had lived in that area since the early 1900's. I graduated from West Pullman Elem. in 1970, as did my grandmother nearly 50 years before that. My great grandfather had a real estate business at 119th & Lowe. I went to church at St. Joseph's Episcopal near the RR tracks at 120th & Eggleston, played endlessly at WP Park (one block from my home). I played in the Roseland Little Leage for several years, which appears to be the only site that may have improved in the last 40 years. I'm not sure who thinks the area may have had a crime problem in the 60's, but I know as children,we would leave on our bikes in the morning and not come home until dark with no worries whatsoever. The real crime came with integration. I vividly remember plenty of police presence my last few years at West Pullman. So many of the pictures bring back so many memories. Thank you so much for putting this together!

Dino -- I remember St. Anthony's because my Dad use to take us to their carnivals, which I believe were held in the parking lot. Now regarding TW4 (Styx) they played at Mendel dances a lot, I remember that name. By any chance do you remember where he lived? thanks for the memories..
said mmcoog
Hi Mary, I lived at 11816 Lafayette, I see our old house in one of your pictures. Sure brings back memories. Regarding the band Styx, I remember they used to be called TW4, The drummer was part of a club we had on Saturday mornings in the basement of St.Anthony Church. I think it was called the vocational club. We would have our meeting and then play field hockey down in the basement. I still go to 8:30 mass once in a while at St. Anthony. Feels like I'm home, but makes me a bit sad.

Mary, No I don't think I would have been in that category but I did use enough VO5 to keep the DA in place. I was a quiet kind of guy that got along with everyone. Even the guys in the Bum Town Gents regarded me as a friend. I remember one week end night picking up Jimmy Moncado on the Ave after his dad broke a bottle over his head. Too many memories that will never be replaced. Thanks again for making this available for all of us. JHazdra

J,what great stories!! Just curious, by any chance were you a "greaser"? I remember in the 60's the guys and girls who wore the leather jackets and were tougher and had a bit of an attitude and were called greaser's.

Mary, After reading all the above plus all the photos's, all I can say is Wow. My parents bought their first home at 12553 S Union in 1946 when I was 5 years old. I went to SCG and still have great memories of that school, in fact in 1989 I went to see my 7th grade teacher , Sister Ruth Frances 10 days before she passed away. Before I got to know Harold Sitco, of Sitco's store which was a grocery store at first, I went to cross 127th & Union at the age of 5 and was hit by a truck by his store. Later while going to Fenger I helped Bud (from Dutch Treat) clean up the inside and remodel the front before he opened sometime in 1956 or 57. After that I worked on the grill that first summer. When I think back at all the preparation before working on the grill and after each day was really something compared to what is done today. We knew the Jawor's real well too. Bowled across the street. Would you beleive I still have the black leather jacket my mom bought at Katzen's for $10.00 on my 16th birthday. I still remember Mr.Coon instucting us on the "Duck Waddle" at Eiche Turner Gym. For many summers my dad would truck me over to St. Anthony's to cut there lawn while my dad did the light work. As for Styx, my brother Rich knew Jim Young (JY). JY lived in the apartements near Sitco's. You might find this interesting. My brother was in a band named "Fawn" which had a great sound. One day my brother asked me to drive to southern Illinios to pick up a friend he knew and bring him back to Chicago. He and my brother sat on the livingroom floor playing there guitar and singing. I thought this guy is good. My brother had him try out for his band, but the other members tuned him down. That guy they turned down was Robin, from "Cheap Tick". Thank you so much Mary for all the effort you have put into this, and I pray that you Guardian Angel will continue to protect you when you visit these areas again. JHazdra

Even with its problems, I'm mostly referring to the 60's, when we were still able to walk the streets and go to the stores without incident. Remember...when Roseland actually had thriving stores?? I knew a little about the mob presence and hearing about the (occasional)gangland slayings in Chicago, not necessarily Roseland, but don't ever remember the Mob doing drive-bys, robbing innocent people, racism, carjackings or shooting innocent people. Sorry, I don't remember any chopshops either. Where were they, I'll go back and take a picture? Where were they? While we're on the subject, I don't recall anyone having to move because of those incidents you mentioned. For your information, I don't just take the tour through Roseland every once in awhile, I'm there practically all the time. Thanks for comments though, I'm sure everyone appreciates you trying to spoil the memories of when Roseland was nice!
said mmcoog
Hi Mary; Thanks for the pictures and the responses they stirred up. But before we all get carried away with this decent neighborhood stuff and start genuflecting, I drifted through a large area of Roseland for years; so don't forget the chopshops on every other block, the occasional gangland slaying, and the endless drunken party--before the neighborhood changed. It's true some of us had a couple decades before cocain and heroin arrived, and we were led to imagine gangs danced and sang like the Jets, but hold the awards. That was a tough and troubled neighborhood without minorities. Which I'm still attached to and make the tour periodically. Actually, I'm personally happy that it hasn't turned into a mall and seems to be slowly reverting to a jungle.

OK, so I NEVER got to sleep tonight (last night?). Gotta go do that test-run of the old Streetcar here in San Diego. I saw two names that I DO know (more later), One is from exactly RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET from me, the other a classmate. A couple more within TWO BLOCKS of the house where I grew up. And "maybe" another one. Thanks SO MUCH for what you GIVEN to ALL of US who've looked at you PHOTOS and read the postings. Do you know of a similar site for Blue Island? We lived right between Roseland and BI. Incredibly, there's a half-block park on the bluffs about 80 feet ABOVE the Pacific, named Calumet Park. Street names in the area include: "Roseland, Calumet, and other Roseland-area street names". The developer MUST've been from "OUR" Roseland. Gotta run. THANKS again!!! -- Ron, La Mesa, CA

I lived in Roseland 1940-to- 1957 and I left to join the navy. When I returned in 61 I worked at Peoples store bakery for a short time. At 11, I would buy bake goods at 111 and wentworth there abouts. I use to get my hair cut at 109 pl and wentworth. The barber would always give me a nickle for candy. Nice guy. As a kid I played at palmer park and went to the State theater at $.25. I lived at 311W.108pl.Those were nice years. I remember when it snowed big flakes and how everything was very quiet. Google now has Chicago on its Street View mapping - The streets in and around Roseland, Pullman, West Pullman etc... are now highlighted and the shots are surprisingly clear. Just go to maps.google.com Plug in an address Click on Street View Click on the little man by green arrow ..... And viola ---- navigate around the streets "IF they are Blue highlighted" Downloading the free Google Earth provides nice aerial views also, but need a very current graphics adapter in your PC - current meaning within last 4 years

Unfortunately there is a (growing) element out there that has gotten away with excessive crime, violence, vandalism and racism for years that have forced law abiding peace loving people to move out of their once safe neighborhoods. How many areas have you seen that were once "nice", "safe" and decent places to grow up in turn into crime ridden, violence plagued, drug infested ghettos? I've seen quite a few. Places that were mostly on the South Side of the city and have now spilled over into the South suburbs. So I know what you mean gardendiva about the NW suburbs, what a difference! But it's a completely different story on the South Side where no amount of goodwill, police, high tech cameras, churches or social programs have been able to keep these neighborhoods intact. So the comment about harmony...nice idea, but unfortunately it's just that,an idea. Can't see it ever happening on the South Side. Never. Styx -- Ok maybe not my favorite group of all time but aren't you at least proud of the fact they came from Roseland? I feel the same way about ##### Butkus and Eliot Ness too. thanks for keeping the memory of Roseland alive. said mmcoog 0 sec. ago

I am the sister of Sparx51 and am 10 years younger. I lived in West Pullman til 1980, and went through the worst of it. I have lots of mixed feelings; was called ##### more times than I want to remember. I also encountered many nice African American people who treated me well, and I treated them the same in return. There are good and bad in all. I attended Gompers, but had to finish at St Anthony's (which honestly I hated) and attended Seton in So. Holland, which I graduated from in 1979. I also worked at Gately's, and I am so glad I did. What a cool store. Got a little sad at the end, but I am happy I am a small part of its great history. I now live in the N.W. suburbs and love it. A different world. My experiences built my character; made me a better person in many ways. Mary, your website is really good--brought back many memories. I still go through West Pullman several times a year to visit a relative who still lives there. During the day, I feel relatively safe. I guess it is still home in some strange way. But, I have to agree with my brother, Styx is over-rated--sorry Dennis.

I went to Willibrord Catholic High School and graduated in 1979. It was such a cool school to go to. I metalot of wonderful people there and it was such a fun place to go to. We used to all meet up at the old doughnut shop on Michigan or get hoagies on 111th St. I am just hoping and praying that the neighborhood can be revived. It has so much history and was a haven for all cultures. I am African American and it was so sad to see "White Flight" take over the area. I just wish people can come to their senses and realize the we are all the same and that together we can all live and work in harmony without fear of each other. I know it is scary over there now but I too really enjoyed your pictures and pray for your safety as you continue giving us fond memories from our youth. God Bless You. Yes Mary you have done a great job here. It is fun and difficult to view these images, but we got to remember the good things about the old neighboorhood. Thanks! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^ The DeYoung Auto Parts store was connected to Dennis DeYoung through family. It was on about 125th and Halsted, on the east side of Halsted. I remember when I was in there for parts and I saw the poster and made a not so nice comment about the band; (Styx not my cup...) and got a lot of dirty looks. OOPS!

I remember thinking Gatelys People Store was Russian. Born at Roseland Community Hospital in 1956. Attended Kohn School K-1st grade. School boundaries changed and went to Van Vlissingen 2nd-8th grade. Attended St. Stephen’s Methodist Church at 112th & State Street. The Friday night dances were something to remember. 25 cent admission and 10 cent Cokes. Shopped “downtown” Roseland and will never forget the fresh donuts in the basement of Gateley’s department store. Spent a lot of time at the YMCA and snacked on sliders (12 cents then) beforing heading home for dinner. I moved to Park Forest after 8th grade and went to Rich Cental H.S. in Olympia Fields, onto Valparaiso University and now live in Indianapolis, IN.

Mary, I've said it before but it bears repeating - YOU DO GOOD WORK! PBTHhh really sparked some memories for me. Stu DeJong Hobbies was a veritable wish-book come true. I used to go there for a balsa wood model airplane to build. This was long before most of your times. I remember getting on the waiting list for a new airplane in WWII - the B-17. This was before the "& Sons" was added to the name. Spent hours in there 'dreaming.' BORNINROSELAND said he lived at 10732 South Perry. I live right around the corner from that address at 305 West 108th Street and when I tried to bring that address up on the tax accessor's website -http://198.173.15.21/ccao/FindMyParcel.asp - to see a vertical view of it, it said it did not exist in their records. Perchance the neighborhood has been razed for something else? Yes, our Roseland has changed for the worse but we are not alone (That doesn't make it any better, I know). I have friends that were born and raised in 'melting pot' neighborhoods in the midwest and it seems that the blight that hit our Roseland was duplicated thousands of times accross this formerly great nation. I lived at 87th and Michigan from 1950-1957 and in Dolton until 1967. I have many great memories of the People's Store. Back before the days of the giant malls, we had fewer choices for major shopping: Roseland, the Loop, or Sear's on 79th street. My brother and I spent many hours waiting for our folks to finish shopping at the People's Store. I especially remember the X-ray machine in the shoe department and, of course, the doughnut machine and Green Rivers. I believe they also sold hamburgers with raw onions that you would eat while standing at the counter. One Christmas (I was 8 or 9 years old) I bought presents for my entire extended family at one of the 10-cent tables on the first floor! I also remember the sale tables with women haggling over who "saw it first." Great memories.

I stumbled on this site and was so excited because I grew up in Roseland. My Parents purchased their home in 1965. I share many of the same memories that others have mentioned. Graduated from St. Willibrord, shopped at Gateley's (even after it moved to 159th)got my first library card at Pullman Library etc. I am a little concerned with the negative attitude of the "new neighbors". We were very middle class. We lived on 100th and LaSalle. Both of my parents are college educated and took pride of ownership in our home. Most of my neighbors are still in there homes or have passed them on to their children. I have to admit, the North End of Roseland appears to be in better shape than South Roseland (no boarded-up houses) I'm devasted by the obvious conditon of Michigan Ave. Also saddend that St. Willibrord is boarded up. Don't judge everyone by the same book. mmcoog.....your dedication is applauded. Thanks for the trip down memeory lane.

Wasn't Ann big on hats? I seem to remember her at church on Sundays and always smiling. Great voice too, always singing at weddings, etc.

Thank you mmcoog! from Craig46ndes@aol.com you spent a lot of time on this! I went to St. Catherines and Mendel (1955-1964). I'll see if I have some pictures for this great site!

Dennis Deyoung grew up in Pullman. My older brothers tell me stories of how they thought he was a wimp as a kid. When they would all be out playing ball he would be in the house learning to play piano.. I guess the joke was on them.. The Panozzo's did have a relitive that lived on 115th and princton about 4 doors down from us (nicest house on th block). I remember as a child peeking in the window and watching a band reherse. Playing the song "buttercup" over and over...

Linda, glad you shared that tidbit with all of us. If it's at all possible let me know that old address and I'll take a current picture of it.

on the styx question, i e-mailed chuck panozzo a couple of years ago. In subject I wrote: hello from the old neighborhood. altho he said he gets thousands of e-mails he had to answer mine. I thought he was from my grandma's neighborhood @ 121st & lasalle. I asked him where they first started their garage band. he gave me the address and i have to look up the old e-mail to post it later. he said that house was the beginning of styx. (he had a twin brother in the band who passed in the 70's or 80's). He said the Panozzo Funeral Home was his parents business. He said he graduated (i believe 1968) from Mendel. The mendel website has an alum page. maybe possible to get a photo from them? I did not know them personally, but when they came in concert in Idaho in 2005,I went with some friends with a sign: "hello from Roseland". One of the original band guys (don't know names rite now) saw us and acknowledged it. Chuck Panozzo was not with the group that day. Linda Swanson Mastronarde
said mastronarde
Ok, I'm taking a chance of being a pain in the ##### here, but I have one more question. I know the members from the group Styx where from Roseland. Did anyone know them personally? It would also be awesome if anyone has any yearbook pictures of them to post here.

I hate to stir up bad memories, but I'm really interested in hearing stories of when the neighborhood started changing. I heard stories from others about race riots, gangfights, and so on. Were these people overexaggerating, or was all this really true? My cousin who group up in Kennsington, in the late 60's and early 70's, said that he had to fight blacks and Puerto Ricans everyday of his life while he was growing up there. Was he putting me on as well, or are these stories true? If they are true, are they being blown way out of proportion, or was life really like that there at that time? Please share your stories. I remember when my family would visit my aunt and uncle in Kensington, I really don't recall people fighting in the streets. I even played outside when we would go and visit them around 1974/75. I remember right on the corner of Kensington and Michigan, right next door to the building my aunt and uncle lived in, it was full of junk. I remember when we would visit them and I would go outside, there were old refrigerators, stoves and other junk on the corner. Kind of like a dumping ground for everyone's garbage. Does anyone else remember that corner looking like that? I drove by there a couple years ago when my cousin told me what the street name was where they lived back then. When I was out there though, I didn't have the nerve to go down the back roads to see the house I was born in, in Roseland. I didn't want to get shot in the head by driving down the wrong street for being a whiteboy. Please, everyone, share your stories about these turbulent times in Roseland history. The stories I heard so far from others really sparked my interest.

Thanks mmcoog, I'm looking forward to seeing a picture of the house I was born in. I have another question. I kind of remember People's Store. We already lived in Riverdale when I remembered going there with my mom. I must of been about 4 or 5 when we went shopping there, in like 1974/75. So it must still have attracted whites at that time. I had an aunt who lived right down the street in Kensington, right off of Michigan Ave on Kensington Ave. Maybe that's one reason why my mom was still shopping there at that time. Not long after that, River Oaks became her place to shop. Well anyway, my question is that I remember we used to go to a very small grocery store to pick up a few things after we left People's Store. I remember my mom would buy me those shoestring potato chips whenever we would go there. We would see one or two of them new neighbors, everyone is refering to, here and there whenever we went there. Maybe that's when the neighborhood was changing. Well anyway, if my memory is correct, if you're facing People's Store, on the left hand side of the building, there's a street that slopes down and the grocery store was right next to (behind) People's Store at the bottom of the slope. I'm sorry if I'm wrong, I was quite young at the time and my memories from back then where pretty fuzzy. If this is correct, can you take a picture of that grocery store as well, mmcoog? Thanks.

I too, grew up in Roseland and we were forced to move in late 1973, when the neighborhood got really bad. I lived at 11628 Lafayette, went to Scanlan until 8th grade and then Curtis for one year before we moved. I would love a photo of my old house. I know the last time I went by, it still looked pretty good. Your photos are great and I really appreciate them. I come to this website from time to time just to see what else you have posted. I know you have touched many people with your work. Thank you very much.

Hi everyone. This site has really captured my interest. I was born in Roseland in 1970. We moved out of Roseland in 1971. We moved to Riverdale. My parents lived in Roseland in the 60's when my sister was born. I always wanted to see the house I was born in, but I was always afraid to drive through that neighborhood for obvious reasons. We lived at 10732 So. Perry Ave. That's what my birth certificate says. If anyone drives by there, can you take a picture of that house for me? My mom told me what a nice neighborhood it was back then. I would really like to see pictures that were taken in Roseland back in those days. I just can't picture Roseland as a nice neighborhood, considering what it looks like now. I want to see all kinds of pictures of Roseland from back then. Even ones with people in them. I'm curious to see what people looked like back then, as far as how they dressed, hairstyles, etc. I also really want to see these NICE Roseland houses from back then with the nice landscapings and all, because I have a really hard time trying to picture this considering the way Roseland looks like today with the burned down, boarded up, condemned houses. Also, how about some old home movies from those old Roseland days?

I love your pictures. I grew up on 111th and Edbrooke, and then in 1968 moved to 123th and Wentworth. I graduated 8th grade from St. Willys in 1971, and then went to the High School for two more years. We moved to Homewood in 1974. I tell my kids great stories about growing up in Roseland all the time. Thanks!

I was born and raised in Roseland. My family and I lived above my father's bakery at 111th and Wentworth. I remember waving to our neighbor who worked at Monarch cleaners and walking two doors down to try to win a winner out of the gumball machine at the corner grocery. I attended St. Nicholas School until 8th grade when we had to move. Roseland was a great place in it's day. I miss it.

Thank you Tonyva58 for setting the record straight! Your story and hundreds of others like it made all of us move from our wonderful community in droves. As I drive through the streets of Roseland in its present day condition I can't believe I once called this home. It's a disgrace! I don't now how anyone in their right mind could be proud to be from there now.

Racism (circa 1972): I was a skinny little 83 pound kid who couldn't walk to the grocery store without being called #####. One time I was walking down Halsted when a man told his little 3 or 4 year old boy "see that #####" and kept at the kid until he started yelling ##### at me. Once I was walking INSIDE a crowded grocery store (Hillmans) when a giant of a man threatened me "Get the fu%# out my way ##### before I crack your skull". I was a friggin' KID! I had a paper route which covered from 113th to 117th between Perry and Wentworth. I loved it at first. I bought myself a new bike at the Schwinn dealer. After about a year or so, I couldn't ride that bike without having rocks or bottles thrown at me. One day, walking the route, I had a gun pulled on me "Your money or your life!" Got my ##### kicked by gangbangers constantly. Dad got his car stolen twice. Cousin got his bike stolen in Palmer Park, (##### kicked also). We didn't move out of Roseland voluntarily. We were forced out of Roseland. A place I loved.

Unfortunately White Castle was torn down at 111th & State it was right next door to the old YMCA. It's now an empty lot. You're right Roseland was a GREAT place!
said mmcoog
Loved your pictures. I grew up at 115th and Harvard, went to SCG then to St. Louis Academy at 117th and State. Married my husband Ken at SCG after meeting him at a Mendel social. We lived at 119th and Stewart for 10 years before moving to the suburbs. Roseland was a great place!! All our family lived there including grandparents, aunts, uncle and cousins. Unfortunately that is not the case now. That was a special place in a special time. Keep the pictures coming. Is the White Castle still on 111th and State?

Thanks for the great pictures. I lived at 128th and Lowe and went to Gompers and Fenger. My husband lived in the 2 flat next to Spake's in picture number 2. He went to St Anthony's and Mendel. His brother also went to St Anthony's and Mendel. His sister went to St Anthony's and to St Willy's. My husband worked at Jewel on 119th St. We met at a Mendel Football game at Gately Stadium. We were married at St Anthony's in 69 and have been married 38 years. Our first apt was at 404 W. 120th. My husband's dad was Manager of Noon Hour Foods in Roseland Little League for 15 years and Steel Fence at West Pullman Park for several years. Sure do miss the old neighborhood.

Yes, I already took one, it's under Stu De Jong's. It's now an alderman's office so it's hard to take pictures of it during the day.
said mmcoog
Hi - any pics of the De Jong & Son's hobby shop - it was at 34 E. 112th Pl., just around the corner from People's on Michigan Ave. I believe that it was next to a large hardware store. On Saturdays summer or winter I would bike from our house at 103rd & Morgan to Roseland to buy another model car to feed my kit building habit - now I have my computer to keep me occupied.

I have enjoyed the pics. Especially those of SCG. I graduated from there and attended Fenger. We lived at 120th and Normal. Great seeing all those places. Thanks!

I don't remember all of these places, but I do remember a lot of them. My family belonged to St. Nicholas parish, I graduated from St. Willibrord and my husband graduated from Fenger. My parents owned a bakery on 111th street just west of Wentworth - Liebentritt's Bakery. Monarch Laundry and Cleaners was on the corner of 111th and Wentworth. We heard the building burned down shortly it was sold. Thanks for sparking good memories - sorry to see what happened to the area.

Great pictures. A little depressing looking at the remains of a once thriving neighborhood. I believe the Dutch Treat was on the SE corner of Halsted and Vermont. As I recall, it was torn down in the early 60's and replaced with a gas station. Not sure what is there now. I tried down loading some of the pictures of Assumption Church. School, and Hall (original church) but could not find a program to open them.

Club Alegro was 117th and Halsted on the east side of the street. My sister's friend's parents ran it. Thanks for all the pictures! Great memories, but would give up my present house in a minute to go back to that time and neighborhood. Nobody moved out. Generations lived there, which is what we lack nowadays. You grew up in Roseland, you married and stayed in Roseland. That just doesn't happen anymore.

Thank you VERY much for the trip! I lived at 123rd & Princeton than moved to 124th & Parnell. My Ma worked at Gately's when I was real young. Then went to work at Jay's. (Usta love the tours!) I spent countless hours playin' ball & later hangin' out at West Pullman Park. I attended Assumption than Mendel. Hung out at Cedar Park Lanes & Kingsway. The photos are AWESOME! I can't thank you enough! Mike

Oh my, what a treat to see these photos! I live in CA now but was raised in Roseland on 12328 Yale Ave - right up the hill from Shimkus Grocery Store. I went to Gompers and then in 6th grade we moved to 949 W 111th St. I graduated from Fenger HS in 1963. My brother and sister went there, too - Rich Kreitling is my brother (All State Football Star who went on to play with the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears). My sister, Betty, married Ed Engle and they've been married for 50 years. These pics are great! Thanks so much!

What a blast from the past. I attended St. Catherine of Genoa School/Church from first through eighth grade (1978); I was married there (1986) and my family held services for my mother upon her passing (1987). So many memories. It all really took me back. Dressel's, McIntyre's, The Coffee Shop, The Ranch....those were the good days. I agree. So many fond memories.

WOW...I had a hundred flash backs..I lived at 12248 S. Stewart from 1964 to 1974 till I was fourteen. My grandparents lived in the house from about the late 1930's till 1964. We lived 3 houses away from West Pullman's field house. I attended St Willy's grade schoool till it closed ( it turned into a high school only ) in 1973-74 and then went to St. Catherine of Genoa for 8th grade. I delivered the Chicago Daily News for John O'Conner when I was 10 to 12 years old and that gave me many different paper routes from St. Anthony's to Scanlon and other routes from 113th to 127th street and Indiana to Halstead. So even as a kid I saw a lot of different places and know at least 50% of all the locations you photographed. Thanks so much for taking these photos and sharing them. Here's a did-you-know: Gately's lives on at www.gatelys.com. I stumbled on them a few years ago doing some research. Apparently some of Mr Gately's great-grandsons saw an opportunity on the Internet. I remember seeing Mr. Gately walking around the store keeping an eye on things. I would get a Green River if I was good and let my mm shop in peace.

What an enjoyable yet disheartening stroll down Roseland/West Pullman's memory lane! I lived at 12640 Union and 12217 Halsted (2 doors south of Kingsway Drive-In) till I moved all of six blocks away to Cal Park in 1961. I went to school and church at Sts. Peter and Paul, got my school uniforms from Gateley's, learned to bowl at Cedar Pak Lanes, became afraid of water at the West Pullman swimming pool, and drank from BOTH those West Pullman park fountains, Joe Shimkus was a friend of my dad's, my mother was waked at Panozzo's. As you can read, your photos gave me much nostalgic pleasure, Thanks so very much. Ed Rimkus P.S. Change the spelling on Nancen to Nansen. The school was named for Frijtof Nansen, the Norwegian explorer.
