Shirley, Thanks for your visit to my album on Amish Barn Building. Like you, I was careful to get permission to photograph this amazing event from the Amish supervisor in charge. I congratulate you on having your album featured. Your obvious respect for these wonderful people is evident by the methods you used to photograph them. The fine composition of your pictures is superb. The titles on each photograph are extremely creative, and each photo adds to the overall story of the Amish. In talking to an Amish farmer in Holmes County, Ohio, I asked him where they got their beautiful carriage horses. He told me that they were formerly racing horses known as trotters from race track stables that were purchased at auctions. He said that they were not fast enough to win trotting races, but the were definitely fast enough for the Amish. Thanks for sharing this wonderful album with the world of Webshots. Hi. I don't mean to criticize anybody as most people that aren't from around here wouldn't understand. I live in Lancaster, PA, and it is extremely offensive to the Amish to take pictures, film, or view them. Out of respect to their lifestyle I would highly suggest caution to anybody looking to capture them on camera. It would be just like inviting a jewish family over for dinner and serving pork. If you are in the area to enjoy the beauty of my home I say welcome and enjoy it! If you're looking for pictures of Amish please buy a post card out of respect to them! Again, this was a message not to condemn anybody, only to inform all who read this!

Hi Shirley; I don't visit Webshots front-page every day and apparently I missed your awesome album being featured. How outstanding it is. I think you have done a really fine job of capturing the lifestyle in Lancaster County. It is on my list of places I would like to visit and I thank you for submitting such a great album. This album was a well deserved feature and I am so glad I came to visit. Best Wishes, Marjie/Olympia,WA

Shirley: Looking at your Amish photos really motivated me..You did such a fanctastic job of composing them. Just over the mountain from me (about 10 miles) is a small valley called Nippenose (named after the Indian tribe in the area) where many Amish families live. I have never gone out specifically for the reason of photographing these fine people. Thanks for the push, you are always an inspiration. May I ask what area you photographed these Amish?....Len

Hi Shirley, thank you for inviting me to your album. I would like to go for a ride in one of the buggies with the horses pulling it. They are beautiful horses. I am adding your site to my favorites list. I love covered bridges also. John and I got married on the covered bridge in Winterset Iowa. It was alot of fun, Brenda in MO.

Congratulations on a very well done featured album. I know very well how much time and effort went into getting all these great photos. I have visited the Lancaster area a few times and love it. I pass a newly forming Amish community on my way to work and am hesitant to photograph them, but I have seen some great photo ops such as boys scooting along the roadside in a wagon and once with two milk cans on the wagon, horses and men working in the fields plowing and later cutting hay. All the hay is being put in loose so far and I've met the horse drawn wagons full of loose hay with teens driving it. The other day, 3 little kids were playing in the buggies in the their yard. All the buggies are black compared to the blue ones in your photos. The ultimate in family and community support came this week after the tragic death of a 10 year old boy who was thrown from a horse as the horse bolted. They were on their way to the woods for logging as they have their own sawmill for the new homes, shops and barns that are going up at record speed. As I approached their area, there were 4 chartered buses. Three were unloading. Mostly Amish men all in black with white shirts and their black hats. What a site to see and what a wonderful support for the families that came from southern PA to start this new community of approximately 150 people. Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos. Donna/NY

These are the most incredible people ~ simple yet hardworking life ~ hummm, maybe that's the way life was meant to be instead of all the gimic's to make our lives simple that in reality only complicate life. Amish children are gorgeous ~ the animals so well cared for ~ the farms immaculate ~ yes, something to be said for that way of life. Your photos of Amishland are perfection...thank you for sharing. I see you're drawn to the drying laundry, the beautiful farms and of course the buggies - and the people. I've read a lot of books on the area and the people - very interesting. Yes, I had missed a part of the last page. Thank you for telling me and for your nice words in My country album. I understand perfectly your obsession about such a peaceful and quiet area. I love country life and it's good to escape from "civilization" sometimes and see how other people live. And, of course, your curiosity is so natural, everything must be so new for you there. I'd love to see it with my own eyes! I've seen one or other documentary about the subject, pieces of Amish life in filmes... We get curious. All the best for you and enjoy your trips as much as you can! Rosa

Hi Shirley, thanks for visiting my albums. You know, I yesterday wondered why your photo of the Bookbinder's was hiding those signs carefully, and of course it is a shame that an Applebees is now occupying this beautiful piece of American heritage.. though it could be worse, eg a BurgerKing or a McD. (Or indeed demolishing.)People in Holland did not like the first Applebee's', so now they are KFC's -- talking of 'from the frying pan into the fire'... Enjoy your Sunday!

Hi Shirley! Thank you for your warm words of appreciation on the 'Featured Member'. It is very nice of you to have taken the effort to write. This album of the Amish country is a very beautiful one. I have always admired the Amish way of life though the nearest I have got to seeing it is to watch the film 'The Witness' with Harrison Ford!! I have been told by friends that the Amish are sensitive to people visiting them. Now, I see this album of yours and I am struck by the simplicity, the uncomplicatedness and the oneness with Nature that they enjoy. What a contrast to the world as we know it!! Thank you for sharing these lovely pictures. Keep well and smile always! :) Best wishes, Suresh from India
