Album Description:
Taken at Waterfront Beach Resort last April 2006. Bataan and Corregidor were the last strongholds of the American & Filipino forces before Japanese forces overran the country in 1942 during World War II. Bataan now has regained its peaceful splendor.

A Lovely Album.

Dear Mary Ann, This is fitting for the Memorial Weekend we are celebrating for veterans. Thanks for sharing this album and for posting your message here so that others may read it. Your prologue is fitting for the men and women of the Philippines and the US Armed Forces who sacrificed their lives so that we can enjoy the freedom we have today. I could not begin to imagine the horrible death march that occurred there. The simple and serene settings that you masterfully portrayed in your album are more meaningful and effective because of the significance of that historic march. I just came back from a whirlwind of a 2 day trip where, since Friday, I attended a retirement ceremony of a Pinoy Commander friend who retired from the Navy after 35 years of service and the wake and burial of a friend's dad who passed away. During the latter ceremony, an army Top Sergeant was standing by on the burial site in full dress uniform. Unbeknownst to me, he was sent by the US Veteran’s Affairs to play the Army bugle Taps (symbolic of the US National Anthem in the mil) at the start of the ceremony and where he asked all veterans and active duty armed forces to render a salute to this Pinoy WWII veteran we were about to bury. He then folded the U.S. flag draped on the coffin and gave it to my friend's mom. It was a poignant moment in time that I captured in picture also. This Pinoy veteran was a guerilla in Bataan during WWII. The U.S. will never forget those who served her. Ding G., Commander, USN

Hi Mary Ann. I'm back for a return visit! Thanks very much for your detailed message - it really adds to the viewing experience when a photographer talks about the motivation behind any particular album or shot. It also works the other way around of course: while any photographer is gratified when others look at his/her work and comment on it, it's more enriching when someone takes the trouble to analyse your work in a constructive fashion. There's obviously ego involved in here to some extent (for instance: I see similarities in your photographic style and my own!) - and in that regard, can I suggest you take a look at the work of "Swissmike62" as I think you'll see something of your own style in his work as well. (Assuming you haven't visited his page already, that is...) I'll be back soon to wander around your other albums - all of which look fascinating. PS: a belated thank-you for introducing me (via your Friends section) to the stunning photography of "Glacierman54". Best regards - Dave

---This comment was earlier posted in Dave Mullany's message center ----- Dear Dave, I struggled to create this album as I wasn't so sure if Americans would even bother to visit it because of the trauma and defeat (Fall of Bataan)they went through during the early part of WW2. On the other hand, I was compelled to do it despite my initial hesitation as I needed to let them know (in my own personal way) that because of their sacrifice and struggle to free our nation from a foreign invading force then, we Filipinos are NOW FREE and independent. (It was a good thing the US won!) And these peaceful, idyllic shores testify to this fact. And this album is my humble thanksgiving to a nation that cared. (Pause) So now that's out of my chest, Dave, I truly value the many constructive comments you gave about my pictorial compositions. The album was an experiment on minimalism, at least that's how I wanted it to look like for most of the shots. Your precious feedback confirms this so. And to think you even bothered to give many and some lengthy comments, knowing that you are an active photojournalist and an inactive magazine editor. Aw shucks (feeling sheepish), I feel honored. Truly, I appreciate you, your thoughts and even more your impressive albums. As you have delighted my start of the week, may yours, too, be a happy one, my friend! ~~~Mary Ann

Hello Mary Ann. Greetings from South Africa. This is a really beautiful, tranquil and carefully composed album and I really enjoyed my stroll through it. What I like especially is the way you manage to take simple, minimal elements - a flower, palm frond, wooden stake, piece of seaweed - and turn the resulting image into a work of calm contemplation. Thanks very much for sharing - Dave

Thanks for a great album. I mostly like the minimalist ones. The coco leaf photo has a nice rhythm and a beautiful colour.. Zeynep.
