    • June 2011 update: As the July transition date approaches staff and supporters are eager to see how the Government of the new country of “South Sudan” (or whatever its new name will be) rises to the many challenges that it will be facing. We are hopeful that the Ministry of Health is ready to accept full financial responsibility for the staff, services, facilities and programs that the clinic has become well known for providing – thanks to the generous support of donors – but the reality is that this transition will not be immediate and JDF will need to continue to assist financially and with technical and operational support until the transition is complete sometime in 2012. We are still seeking funding and grants for targeted programs dealing specifically with women and children’s health along with general public health issues like: TB, malnutrition, HIV/AIDS which will allow us to reach an ever expanding regional population that remains underserved by any formal health services. There is always current information and photos available on the clinic’s official website: johndaufoundation.org/ Thanks for your interest and support! Don Cross

    • It has been 3 years now since we first arrived and started to dig and build this clinic. We have been blessed by having many hundreds of individual donors who believe in our mission to take care of those less fortunate who are in desperate need of simple health services. There have been many volunteers who have assisted in providing medical training and labor in improving the facilities and our deepest thanks goes to our dedicated clinic staff who work under extremely harsh environmental condidions to perform their care giving services. I will be going once more to this clinic in Duk Payuel South Sudan on March 9 (2010) to repair equipment and assist in building an eco-dome and also more conventional (western style) block housing units for our staff. As always, I appreciate your continued interest in this clinic and our efforts in South Sudan. You may find current project information and photos and video by visiting our clinic website at: Johndaufoundation.org Thanks everyone! Don Cross

    • August 2008 update: My thanks to the over 11,000 viewers of these photos for your interest. Though there are many new photos to be posted here on Webshots, you can see great photos of the clinic doctors and staff by going to our new website at: johndaufoundation.org There is plenty of information there on recent developments, present plans for the next season of Medical Team Visitations and immunization outreach programs as well as information about the current Board, the staff, and opportunities for you to get involved in this important effort which is focused on providing quality primary medical services to an ever increasing population of returning refugees and resettling South Sudanese. This clinic is the only one of its kind serving an area the size of L.A. County, California. It is not uncommon for patients to walk over 50 miles to carry a sick or dying loved one to the clinic for medical treatment, hopefully in time. We are self funded (largely through the efforts of John Dau) but also from intrested folks like you who understand the role basic health care plays in providing hope and strength to a population that has suffered so much as they return to rebuild and restore their proud heritage of being self reliant. Please visit the new JDSF website for this month's updates and much more.

    • If you would like to be a (very important) part of this project, please consider how you or your school or social group, troop, club, could host a fundraiser which would assist us in operating this clinic in a very remote part of South Sudan. Donations may be sent to ACSF, 97 East Genesee St. Skaneateles, New York, USA 13152. Please check our website: acsudanfoundation.org We made a commitment to build, staff and fund the clinic until May of 2010 at which time the Health Ministry is supposed to take over those costs and responsibilities. We hope and pray that peace and stability can prevail in this region to allow for this transfer of responsibility. In the meantime, this clinic will be funded through the generosity of folks like you who either donate directly, or want to organize a school class bake sale, or another type of fun fund raising project to keep us operating each month. For those out there who would like to make a more powerful impact, there are opportunities for specific needs at the clinic which you could fund in whole or in part. They are: 1. Transportation-we do not have a vehicle- 2. Solar or Wind stand alone power - we have only limited generator and some solar capability. 3. Fund a month's worth of Medicines (presently averaging $5,000) 4. Fund a special treatment program - 5. Fund the monthly supply flight 6. Fund the diesel for generator (runs well pump) 7. Gift in the "NAME OF" we will honor any memorial named gifts which are made to support this clinic operation. Thank you for your interest in this clinic and I promise to get new recent photos up on this site soon. Don Cross

    • February 20th 2008 It was just one year ago that the first team of volunteers arrived and began to dig footers and mix concrete for the foundations. Our goal was to have all concrete done, and the steel up so that Team 2 could start roofing and siding when they arrive on Feb 26. Now it is one year later and the clinic has been operating since May. Now that the wet season is over there are many more patients walking or being carried over long distances to receive medical care in this clinic. It is truly a "BEACON OF HOPE" for so many in need of medical care in this region. Since December there have been visiting medical teams from the US who have stayed at the clinic and assisted the staff with more serious surgical procedures and diagnosis. Today Dr. Dave Reed is there (from Syracuse NY) and is assisting in a public health outreach to treat/prevent the guinea worm infections that infect so many children but have gone untreated because of lack of medicine and people to administer it. He reports that more than 1,500 patients will be treated in this program this week. Dr. Dave will stay at the clinic until the end of February and we really appreciate all he has done in the time he has been there.

    • DECEMBER 20th 2007, Now that the rainy season is over and the roads will be passable the clinic staff is gearing up for an upsurge in patient visits. To date the record was 95 in one day. The biggest news is that John Bul Dau is in Sudan and will be visiting the clinic this month. He will also be bringing rugged portable tent type structures to be erected for staff and visitor housing. Also arriving this month is a group consisting of: First Presbyterian Church of Skaneateles Pastor Dr. Craig Lindsey who will be accompanying Medical Dr. Glenn Geelhoed and his team from George Washington University Medical Center. The medical teams will be consulting with clinic medical staff to review case histories and they will present some advanced methodologies for treating more complicated wound and delivery cases. As many of you may know from visiting our website at: acsudanfoundation.org the funding for the day to day operations of this clinic has been and will continue to be (for the next 30 months) entirely from donations made by individuals like you. 100% of each dollar donated goes directly to purchase and transport the medicines, pay clinic medical staff, and provide equipment, fuel and upkeep for the site. Please consider making a donation either in your name or in the name of a loved one to help make a real daily difference on the ground in South Sudan in Duk Payuel. As I say to many who ask why we volunteered to go and build this clinic: "While we can't solve all of the problems we see in the in the world, we have a Christian and moral obligation to try and change SOME of them" Thank you for your interest in the clinic, these photos, and the people of South Sudan. Merry Christmas, and may God Bless you and your family in the year ahead. Don Cross - Skaneateles, NY. USA

    • October 31st 2007: Clinic Monthly Update- Dr. Miriam reports that the ground is drying up some and more folks are coming in from outlying areas. She said that they handled 99 patients yesterday - a record! The members of the ACSF task force have been taking the story and photos of the clinic "on the road" in an effort to raise awareness and interest for those who can help support the clinic. We have an agreement with the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) to cover all costs for medicines, salaries, transport and maintenance until May of 2010. We have up to now (in the rainy season- hard to travel) been seeing 50 to 70 people per day or about 1500 per month. Cases ranging from G.I. problems, infection, bites, broken bones, eye diseases, malnutrition, worms, labor and delivery complication, and one case of malaria- all of which have been treated and had improved outcomes. Our costs to support this clinic have been ranging around $25,000 per month. At the rate of 1500 patient visits this comes to about $16.67 per visit. We are working on obtaining better pricing for medicines and reducing the air transport costs once the roads are passable. All donations fund the clinic at a rate of 100%! All U.S administrative work is done by volunteers so that every penny goes to medicines, clinic staff salaries, transport and maintenance of the facility. If you would like to assist us in supporting this important project please contact us at: acsudanfoundation.org. This is a wonderful opportunity for naming a gift for someone "who has everything" or is difficult to buy for in the coming Holiday Season. There are very few ways that you can "do so much for so many" with a small contribution. Thank you for your interest and God Bless! Don Cross

    • If you would like to know more about this particular clinic and how a group of "regular people" like you created the task force which eventually turned a vision of one of the "Lost Boys" into a reality please contact us at: ACSF 97 East Genesee Street, Skaneateles, New York 13252 USA Our web address is: acsudanfoundation.org October 8th 2007: This weekend we see again the examples of barbarism in the Darfur region where 7,000 villagers were driven from their homes which were burned to the ground by forces loyal to the Khartoum (northern) Sudan government. Please keep these people in your prayers that they may soon find peace as opposing groups find compromise that will result in permanent peaceful resettlement. If you wish to make contribution that will improve life in Southern Sudan this very month you can do so by supporting the continued operation of our medical clinic - the first of its kind- built by all volunteers with donations from individuals like you who wanted to make a difference for these people who ask for so little. Thanks for caring... DC

    • October 2007 CLINIC UPDATE The pictures shown were taken in the Spring of 2007 as 5 teams of volunteers worked in 110+ degree heat to construct a modern medical clinic in the midst of an area devistated by the 20 year Sudan Civil war. Our construction teams taught local Dinka villagers how to operate power tools and other building skills so that they could assist us in the building's construction and help to maintain it after we departed. The clinic opened "for business" on Tuesday May 1st, 2007 (only 75 days after start of construction)and is presently seeing between 50 and 70 patients per day. There is a full time medical staff consisting of: Medical Doctor, Pharmacist, 2 Nurses, Midwife, Lab Technician, and an Operations Manager and two maintenance persons. The funds to design, transport, build and staff and provide all of the medical supplies has been through contributions to the ACSF (American Care for Sudan Foundation). This is a non-profit 501 c3 organization that originated through the members of the First Presbyterian Church of Skaneateles, NY 13152 USA. Our present operating costs for medicines, shipment, clinic payroll average around $ 25,000 per month. We made a committment with the Government of South Sudan to support this clinic for until April of 2011 at which time the new government will assume operations responsibility. We would ask that anyone viewing these photos please consider making a small contribution to the ongoing support of this wonderful project. We are making a difference in South Sudan. 100% of all donations goes to suppoer this clinic operation. There are no administrative costs (we are volunteers) involved. Donations may be sent to ACSF, 97 East Genesee St. Skaneateles, New York, USA 13152. Please check our website: acsudanfoundation.org, one note though is that we ARE NOT AFFILIATED with PAYPAL OR DIRECT CHANGE any longer as we wish 100% of donations to go to clinic itself. Thank you for your interest in my photos and our clinic. Don Cross
