Early European explorers referred to South Africa's Cape Peninsula as "the Cape of Good Hope" (because it offered a convenient provisioning post on the long journey to the East) or "the Fairest Cape" (because of its great natural beauty." But come winter, when freezing winds swirl in from the Antarctic, then the Cape truly lives up to its other, less appealing name - "the Cape of Storms. We made a brief visit in August (the middle of the African winter) and the region was under attack from some of the worst weather conditions in decades...violent winds, rainstorms (some 10,000 poor people were left homeless after rivers broke their banks and flooded the surrounding land), mountainous seas (with waves up to 60ft at the famous Dungeons surfing break at Hout Bay) and - in the mountains in the hinterland - among the heaviest snowfalls in years. This and my other Cape albums attempt to capture some of that savage beauty...

Dave, wow a fantastic album.. as I have come to expect from you, love all the details in the captions, makes it so much more intersting. I prefer the non enhanced images but that is just me a sucker for the magic of capturing something with just a camera. The first image thumbnail had me concerned initially as I thought it was a huge wave about to crash and then I saw the full size image and realised what it was. Spectatular sights indeed. Rough waters I remember from the days when we migrated here via ship around the cape. There was hardly a piece of crockery left by the time we got to CapeTown. Scary stuff to sail through waves that huge and I have never seen wave that size since. Everyone was so ill. Ah the memories these images recall for me. I digress... Dave this is an outstanding album. I loved the moods of the seas and they skies and how beautiful the village is.
