  • Very very nice album. Thanks to you, I am able to see the beauty of Moscow, very rich in color. You must be one very lucky person to be able to visit the world and capture its beauty thru your Camera. Your a very generous person to share your experiences in travelling. I hope one day I will be able to do the same thing and then share also. I will be seing your other albums, more power and God Bless.

  • Not only a great collection but mainly a beautiful one. These domes are magnificent. I saw some of them, 4 years ago, when I hadn't yet a digital camera. All the best. Helena

P.D. Y espera... que ahora "me voy" a Praga a llorar otro porquito...

  • My dear Manuel, what a original and enchanting album you have here, so full of wonderfully composed photos. I would gladly comment on all of them, but i would only end up repeating myself. They all look simply amazing! The Russian domes, by themselves, already are something to look at, but you have managed to turn each picture into something special with that keen eye of yours. Thank you for sharing and congratulations on another great work. Take care, Marina.

  • Fascinating commentary.

  • MY BRIEF COMMENTARY: Although, the Russian Orthodox Church did not assign officially any symbolism to the exterior shape of a church, onion domes are popularly believed to symbolise eternal burning candles. The religious philosopher Prince Yevgeny Trubetskoy argued (1917) that the onion shape of Russian church domes may not be explained rationally. According to him, drums crowned by tapering domes were deliberately scored to resemble candles, thus manifesting a certain aesthetic and religious attitude. Onion domes often appear in groups of three, representing the Holy Trinity, or five, representing Jesus Christ and the Four Evangelists. Domes standing alone represent Jesus, but from another point of view, the prominent Russian statesman, ethnographer, and author of the first full-scale Russian history, Vasily Tatischev, believed that the five-domed design of Russian Orthodox Churches was propagated by Patriarch Nikon, the seventh patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, who liked to compare the central and highest dome with himself and the four lateral domes with other patriarchs of the Orthodox world. As you can see in my photos, the domes are often brightly painted: their colours may informally symbolise different aspects of religion. Green, blue, and gold domes are sometimes held to represent the Holy Trinity, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus, respectively.
