Album Description:
This 16th-century church still has its original stone walls . Note the replica of St. Peter's dome at the main altar & the Madonna encased in glass. The first Philippine saint, Lorenzo Ruiz, started here as an altar boy.

Mary Ann, I enjoyed seeing this beautiful old church. It has been through many trying times but still perseveres. Interesting that Ding grew up there. Thanks for sharing. Carol

Dear Mary Ann, This is a beautiful album of the Binondo church which is the parish church of the community where I grew up. I went to the nearby Pedro Guevara Elementary School and the Jose Abad Santos High School there before I attended the University of the Philippines. The church is very ornate and has a large duomo. It is a short walk away to our favorite restaurant in Ongpin (Chinatown) where I would order "kekiam" (rolled chicken meatloaf) and "pancit lomi" (thick noodles with seafood). I think this is one of most beautiful churches in Manila, along with the Manila Cathedral and the San Agustin church. Thanks for sharing. Regards, Ding

Erected in 1596, Binondo Church is one of the oldest places of Christian worship in the Philippines, but over the centuries the original edifice has sustained considerable damage from earthquakes and other natural disasters. Today the octagonal bell tower is all that remains of the 16th century construction. The upkeep of the present church is largely funded by the Catholic Chinese community, many of whom reside or operate businesses in neighboring Chinatown. ~~~Taken from http://www.wcities.com/en/record/,228189/186/record.html
