Album Description:

The traditional Malay house is a timber house raised on stilts. It is basically a post and lintel structure with wooden or bamboo wall and thatched roof. Windows are plentiful, lining the walls and providing good ventilation and views for the house.

  • Hi Joy, you have a very interesting album here. These shelters are sure different from our traditional homes here in Canada. Your climate must be very hot and humid. Living on stilts must be fun. I will answer your Q. in the message column, so check OK...Larry in Winnipeg.

  • Building the house on stilts allows for a cooling effect. Often, you will find that the area beneath is used for storage. In East Malaysia (Borneo), livestock like pigs and poultry are reared beneath the house.

  • Interesting construction, Joy. Are the stilts to prevent flooding?
