Ramla was founded at 716 by the Caliph Suliman ibn Abed al-Malik, and its name was derived from the Arabic word ramal - meaning sand. Ramla became those times the capital of "Jund Filastin", wich was one of the five districts Syrian province of the Arab - Muslem empire. Ramla was the pricipal city and district capital until the arrival of the Crusaders in the 11 century. In the early years of the Crusader kingdom of Jerusalem, control over this stratgeic location led to three consecutive battles between the Crusaders and Egyptian armies from Ashkelon. As Crusader rule stablilized, Ramla became the seat of a seigneury in the kingdom of Jerusalem. The Crusaders identified it with the biblical Ramathain and called it Arimathea. On March 2,1799 , Napoleon Bonaparte occupied Ramla during his unsuccessful bid to conquer Palestine, using the Franciscan hospice as his headquaters.

Ran, what a touching amalgam and coexistence of the great religions of the world. You have captured this synthesis with much sensitivity. Thanks so much for the historical information. It is a wonderful gesture on your part to have dedicated this album to Carol, who has brought so much friendliness and many lovely albums to webshots. Suresh

This is a lovely mixture of images, Ran. I enjoyed the Photo Mgr. slideshow, but had to stop and comment on the oranges. How nice that you dedicated the album to Carol! ... Friends of ours fly to Tel Aviv tomorrow night for a week's tour; we're hoping the weather will be good for them. ... Judy
