Album Description:
On May 15, I visited Lucban town. Heavy rains did nothing to dampen my thrill as I walked along the narrow streets, ogling like a kid in wonderland. This album is my salute to this town's defining moment - the glorious Pahiyas Harvest Festival!

Mary Ann, many thanks for putting up such a colorful and informative album on this festive occasion in Lucban. The pictures speak for themselves and your notes just make them go over the top. Every house tells a story and everybody has a big smile including me! This is another masterpiece from your collections of beautiful Philippines. Now the whole world is treated to the trip you afforded us in the province of Quezon. The rains may have dampened the spirit of the event, however, I did not sense that from the photographer nor the tourists and locals in the album. Bravo, my friend.

"The fiesta color of summer come alive as Lucban celebrates the SAN ISIDRO PAHIYAS FESTIVAL. Every year, thousands of tourists flock to this historic town. Its cool, fresh and invigorating climate earns her the singular distinction of being called the Summer Capital of Quezon province. The festival held every May 15 has become one of Philippines' tourist attractions. At this time, each household tries to outdo each other in friendly competition as they vie for honor in recognizing their creativity. Decking the hall or decorating the wall with "Kiping" and agricultural harvest is what "PAYAS" or "PAHIYAS" literally means. Farmers show their bountiful produce such as chayote, radish, pepper and grains of rice. There are miniatures locally known as "ANOK", fruits, vegetables and longganisa (local sausage) strung together in the most original fashion. Residents engaging in other forms of livelihood display their products in thanksgiving. The handicraft manufacturer has his house decked with colorful buntal hats, or the butcher has a roasted suckling pig (lechon) laid on the window. The most traditional and certainly the most attractive décor is "KIPING" leaves which are adorned and strung together to form all sorts of shapes, from chandelier called "ARANGYA" to huge flowers. Kiping is made from ground rice flour, shaped using "cabal" leaves or other leaf forms and colored in radiant red, fuschia, yellow, green and other bright shades. When kiping catches the light of the sun it turns into a veritable cascade of color. The celebration is a form of thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest and in honor of the patron saint of farmers, San Isidro de Labrador. A procession of the image of San Isidro is held, and it is said that houses along the route of the procession will be especially favored and blessed in the coming year. During the celebration specialty foods can be had & bought such as the delicious Lucban longganisa, puto seko, broas, tikoy and other delicacies." Taken from http://www.pahiyasfestival.com
