  • A very interesting place to visit and what an awful death for all of them. The monastery reminds me a little of a Japanese pagoda in it's design. Great shots, Alex. Best wishes, Sue UK

  • Ekaterinburg (Yekaterinburg), the capital city of the Urals, was founded in 1723 by Tzar Peter the Great (and named after his wife, Catherine). Laying on the border between Europe and Asia the city played an important trade-intermediary role. The city witnessed the death of monarchy in Russia, as it was there that the last Russian czar Nicolas II with his family was assassinated, in Ipatiev house by the Bolsheviks on July 16, 1918. On May 1, 1960 American U2 spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers was hit by a missile launched from the local military base. The city was closed to the outside world until 1990 because of its strategic defense industries. The city is associated with another famous political figure, Boris Yeltsin, who was born in the village of Butka not far from Ekaterinburg. Under Yeltsin's orders, the house where the Tzar and his family were killed was destroyed; a wooden cross and a chapel were been installed later. This place has been recognized by the Russian Orthodoxal church as a sacred and now Cathedral-on-the-Blood is constructed exactly on Ipatiev house once stood. The remains of Tzar family were taken away to the forest outside the town. Trying to hide remains, they burned the bodies, tried to dissolve them in acid and finally threw them in a flooded collapsed mine. Later they decided to move remains and hide it in deeper mine but by the pressure of attacking White Army they had to throw the bodies right under the road. This place was hidden and no investigations were successful until 1979 when czar remains were discovered but for political reasons they could not be exhumed. Exactly one day after taking power in 1991, Boris Yeltsin, first Russian president retrieved the remains, and the identification process began. Many teams of experts, Russian, British and American investigated these remains with DNA expertise for 10 years and came to conclusion that the bones were those of Nikolai, Alexandra, Olga, Tatiana, Anastasia and the four servants.
