  • We spent a week barging on the Canal du Midi in South-Western France. The region is truly a cultural and historical crossroad. Rich in drama, passion, war, sweeping social change, rebellion and religious persecution, this beautiful land has played host to the Romans, Basques, the Spanish, the English, Catalans, Catholics, Protestants, Cathars, kings, poets, troubadours, fugitive Popes, pretenders, noblemen, mercenaries, musketeers and even the Vikings. It goes by many names - the Midi, Gascony, Languedoc, Roussillon, Aquitaine, the Midi-Pyrenees, Perigord, Quercy and - back in the mists of time - Occitania. But whatever you call it, you will never forget a visit to this remarkable place.
