  • Dearest friend Ding. I enjoyed very much your album of this wonderful Basilic. It was also very interesting to read the story and restoring after the horrible fire. It became again a rare jewel. Thank you for sharing. Without you and your beautiful pictures i would never have seen. I wish you a wonderful week full of happyness, warmest regards, Evi

  • Dear Ding, The St Augustine Cathedral is a treasure trove of beautiful stained glass window art, tile work and sculpture pieces. Indeed this is such a wonderful feast for the eyes coupled with a wondrous sense of long history that dates back to the 16th century! I cannot help but draw a parallel of this church with our Philippine cathedrals that date back to the same 16th century when Spanish colonization was at its zenith. And I do believe that Florida at one point in its early history was a colony of Spain, as was my country, the Philippines. Thank you so much, Ding, for sharing this album. For all its historical value and the architectural similarities with Philippine churches - I have been enriched! ~~~Mary Ann

  • The city of St. Augustine was founded and established in 1565 by Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. He began his adventure by sailing from the port of Cádiz, Spain. As the City of St. Augustine approached the 400th anniversary of its founding, Archbishop Joseph P. Hurley (the sixth Bishop of St. Augustine) commissioned the renovation of the Cathedral as one of the Diocese’s contributions to the quadricentennial efforts. This included the addition of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. The renovated Cathedral was dedicated on March 9, 1966 by William Cardinal Conway, Archbishop of Armagh (Ireland). On December 4, 1976, Pope Paul VI raised the Cathedral to the status of minor basilica. It was the 27th American church to be honored as such by the Holy See. http://www.thefirstparish.org/history.html
