Photos taken 29 May 2009. Aper pri, no flash, wide open aper, fluor WB, ISO sens 25,600 equiv. Very dark inside cave with only stateg placed fluor lights. Steadied camera on walkway handrails.

    • Thanks, Dave. Shooting Carlsbad was a hoot! I toured Mammouth many years ago with my Canon F-1 film camera. True, it pales in comparison with Carlsbad. Plus, the bat flight at dusk was a special treat.

    • Hi Chris. And thank you for the compliments. Yes, flash is allowed. My only regret was not packing my SB-800 and monopod when flying in from Fla. Agree most distant shots require a strong flash. SB-800 can deliver. However, toward the end of the tour you reach the "Big Room", can accommodate 14 football fields. Absolutely astonishing in size and scale. Flash not much help there.

    • I've always wanted to see Carlsbad. Great job of capturing the formations with only ambient light. Do they allow flash photograpy? The place looks so big, I'm not sure a flash would work anyhow. Congratulations on being featured.

    • Thanks so much, Loree. Had I known I was going to shoot Carlsbad I would've packed my Nikon SB-800 flash and monopod when visiting a friend in El Paso. I live in Florida. More images would've rendered truer color and definition. There's a lesson for ya, can never pack along enough gear. :-)

    • blevins921. Stayed for a short time after twilight to watch several hundred bats fly. Strange how a few dozen at a time emerge from the cave, circle for a bit then fly off. Park Ranger said it takes many hours for approx 400,000 bats to fly. Amazing!

    • You did an excellent job with your camera and skills in capturing the caverns - Amazing work - Wish I were as talented when I was at the caverns....my pictures were horrid....next time I'm going to try your technique instead of being in a hurry to get thru the caves.     • The album is so good! I can put my self right into the scene. Did you see the bats coming out of the cave at twilight? We saw maybe about 30 or 40 and that was all.
