• we drive south from Windhoek on the B2 paved highway
  • its a beautiful morning in what looks like west Texas range country

  • windmills and cattle trucks, more Texas like every mile
  • at the town of Rehoboth we turn on to the dirt C26 highway and our world changes
  • here we begin 5 hours of the roughest road I have ever endured
  • out the front through the rock screen
  • we are still 4000-5000 feet high, dry and hot, but pretty
  • scattered ranches and scattered game, think they call this Nauchas
  • somewhere we must go down if we are going west
  • and here it is, Streethoogte Pass, we must descend 2,500 feet in 3 miles
  • from the central highlands to the Namib Desert on our awful road
  • others are making it ahead of us
  • a pottie stop is a good idea and seatbelts are another good idea
  • we give the tree up to the next group and hit the road again
  • I don't know how steep, but I'd guess at least a 15 degree descent
  •  a campground and a power pole, how can it be this bad?
  • nothing to show size on the side of the hill
  • as we get lower the switchbacks become more tight...note the paving bricks to keep vehicles from

  • even our small bus had to backup to go around this curve
  • at the bottom looking back, doesn't look as steep as we know it is
