    • Dear Mr. Mitchell, What great photos! Did you live in SHanghai. Were you by chance in the foreign service, as was I? I am currebntly writing a biography of Chiang Kai-shek for Harvard University Press. I would like to use the photo of the North Gate area at the time of the fall of the Qing. May I ask the source of the photo in your collection? If you agree, in the book I will credit you with the photo. Sincerely, JAY

    • Great photos. I am keen to relate to Shanghai. I am Scottish and my Great-Uncle Donald worked for the Hongkong & Shanghai Bank Company in Shanghai in the 1920's and 1930's. He died there in the late 1930's and was buried in Bubbling Wells Street (Road) Cemetery (now Nanjing St), near the old Chinese temple. The cemetery is long gone since the 1950's and is now a park amidst the busy shopping malls. I am trying to find out more about his life and times. Actually, my son, who's 13, is going to China with his school in January 2008 and will visit Shanghai. I want him to see the places his Great-Great Uncle Donald would have seen and recognised and also to see where he was buried. Thanks Lachlan

    • Hi, I really was glad you posted old pictures of Shanghai, My parents were from Shanghai. I have only seen a couple of pictures of shanghai from my parents. I've gotten a few good books from the library but not enough. They escaped in 1947 or so and have very very few pictures. I was raised as an American, never thinking about my history till now. My father is dead, my mother very old, and I'm trying to understand where she came from. Pictures say so much more than you can imagine. If you have more I'd love to see them. I am trying to find pictures of their old homes or anywhere they might have been. They were rather wealthy and catholic, so many family members were inprisoned and tortured, killed and houses and all possessions were taken away. Anyway, thanks Email me if you want at lpoppen@yahoo.com
