Hi! You asked if the nests belonged to birds or insects. They look like the nests of processionary caterpillars. If you look at my album Desert Tracks No 5, you will see a bigger Bag Moth Nest, and Desert Tracks No 7 shows a caterpillar coming out of a Bag Moth Nest which had fallen to the ground.
