I grew up on Boyd Avenue, attended OLV Church and School, and St. Peter's Prep, ushered at the Loew's, worked a newsstand at the Jersey Central Terminal, and left forever to join the Army in 1952. I now live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, a retired university professor. Your photos are very evocative of a city now long gone but, perhaps, with some hope for a resurrection.

I grew up in the lafayette section of Jersey city and attended Assumption BVM grade school on Van Horne Street graduating 8th grade in 1969. I'm still in contact with plenty of my classmates. It was a beautiful parish with May processions to the church for the crowing on the Blessed Mother on Mothers day on Pacific Avenue. I would like to hear from any others who may be from the part of the city. I live in Mt. Carmel Pa with my wife Barbara. My only complaint is that there is never nothing on lafayette and that area down there. I would love to see photos of Assumption church and the old school. I know Lafayette park is now Ercel Web park.

Thank you for the wonderful memories. I was born and raised in JC (lived on Belmont Ave. my whole life until I got married in 1968). I went to St. Aedan's Grammar School (along with my future husband) and St. Dominic's (The Academy)! Other than a reunion in 1998 at SDA, I hadn't been in JC since 1970. I certainly didn't recognize the downtown area.

WOW!---This was really great, and will be appreciated by many,as myself, for a long time to come.Recently, my nephew came to N.J.,and I took him around Jersey City,to make a video of places dear to our hearts, and presented at my sister's 50th wedding Anniversary party. Included in the video were some of their "old-time' friends. It brought happiness tears to many. I can't wait to share this with them ! Have a great life, Bob

Dear fellow Jerseyite, I moved to Southern Calfornia over 40 yrs ago and have had very few trips "back home." I must tell you that this wonderful site made me homesick for the beautiful buildings and locations that I hardly remembered. If they're your personal photo's, you've done us a great service in bringing those memories back to us. May I suggest one thing, please have someone proof read your spelling and/or typing of the text. You have many errors, especially of my former high school which is SNYDER, not Synder. I'm proud to be a graduate of that high school, which I understand is now the first charter high school in the state. Friends of mine recently visited Snyder and bragged about the state of the art programs and hi tech equipment it has. Thank you so much for this wonderful, heart warming, brings a tear to my eye, site. CC

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your photos of JC, my hometown too. Wish someone had a shot of Litz (sp?) Drugstore at Journal Square, where they made the best ice cream sundaes, all named for JC streets, i.e. Hudson Boulevard. You are certainly a talented photographer. Hope more folks with JC photos will make them available for those of us who remember when (smile)! Anyone who has any old pics of JC from the 50s can always email me at almostdollheaven@triad.rr .com, would love to see them.

It is so nice to see New Jersey presented so beautifully. Great pictures with much detail (what kind of camera?): are you a professional photographer? You make NJ look clean, and your historical facts are interesting. I hope to have time to view more of your work [as time allows.] Peace. Joe

I think I've written in your guestbook before. But I wanted to thank you again for me being able to view pictures of my hometown (JC) and Morristown where I worked for 16 years years. I love Morristown and miss it very much. Still have living in Central PA. I hope you read this because I wanted to give you a link my aunt just sent me for old pix of The Stanley and The Loews - http://www.gabesplayerpianos.org/html/Stanloew.html. Thought you would enjoy these old pictures :)

I didn't have time for all this album but I will be back. Enjoyed the info in captions. Got a chuckle from grandpa not knowing why he was retired at 95. I think you would make a great tour guide for tourists. Maybe in your next career! Dynna in MI.

Thanks for the comments on my NJ page. I truely enjoyed the virtual tour you provided with your photos. If you have not visited my pages recently, come back! you'll see we also share a love of classic cars. I just started gathering shots of them whenever I can. drop me a line. I'd like to share some stories about my connections with many of the places in your Jersey albums. I was born in the old Margaret Hague when it was still fairly new. joes_jersey@cox.net
