the 40 km trek to the Machu Picchu starts at this wild river. although the trek is "only" 40 km long, it is mostly either uphill or downhill, and much of it is on stairs (segments of the old inca trail, and mostly newer trail). the first day is a 12 km walk, some up and some down, but mostly flat.
