US 12 crossing the Montana - Idaho Border at Lolo Pass. Although US 12 follows close to where Lewis and Clark crossed these same mountains, this section of US 12 wasn't completed until the 1960s. The mountains are steep and the forest is surprisingly dense, making road building difficult. Lewis & Clark certainly didn't choose the easiest way through the mountains.
