The hardy lotus is a herbaceous perennial that is anchored in the mud by horizontal stems with roots that form at the nodes, or knuckles. These stems produce leaves early in the season that float on the surface, whereas leaves produced mid to late season emerge from strong rigid leaf stalks that tower several feet into the air. They are joined by these large fragrant flowers.
