Rocks fallen from the hills in the distance mysteriously move across the mud surface of an ancient lake bottom leaving a long furrow. The rock is about 10 kg and about 40 cm diameter. jmeeter, you obviously did not read the article you linked to at wikipedia. The link you gave just made mention of a place where this phenomenon is mentioned in a novel. If you were to read everything ABOVE your link you would see that this is truly a REAL photo.

Not a hoax, just went there last month. It's written up in the Death Valley National Parks info, if you're a dis-believer. One of the world's famous mysteries.

No one really knows. It remains a mystery even though there have been teams of scientists that have studied the area and the rocks extensively. Even more mysterious is the sites proximity to a large crater created by a massive meteor striking the earth many years ago. Theories abound from ice crystals to the wind to ???. Its anyone's guess...great photo though!
