Album Info:

Shotley Gate, the old Royal Navy training base for boys, showing the ships rigging. At the passing out ceremony of these fledgling ratings, one boy would climb the mast to stand on a very tiny platform unsupported, he was known as the 'button boy'. On my visit here one of these very button boys from 1953 was on business in Ipswich and just had to make a detour to see the place again, fortunately the gate custodian allowed us into the parade ground area for a look (J Cooper)
