On the site of the old Independent Bathhouse, the Maurice opened January 1, 1912, after a design by George Gleim of Chicago. It was remodeled in 1915 by Mann and Stern. The 100 foot x 100 foot building, an eclectic mixture of Italian and Spanish Renaissance Revival, is brick and stucco with inset colored tiles. Maurice also had a roof garden, and in the 1930's, a therapeutic pool.
