The huge back terrace of "the Breakers". It looked like a palace... and was meant to - after all, the Vanderbilts had come to think of themselves as American nobility. This was the era when wealthy American heiresses were being married off left and right to cash-strapped Euorpean nobility. I guess both families got what they wanted. The Europeans got an infusion of cash & the Americans gained repectabilty.
