Here he is standing beside a tree around which is coiled a serpent. The serpent was thought to hold the secrets of the earth since it lives both above and below ground. This one may represent Python, who Apollo killed when he took the Delphi oracle as his own. The priestess was called the pythia in honor of the slain serpent.
