The proposal for extension for Mettupalayam Branch to Nilgiri was mooted in 1875. Mr. Riggenback, the Swiss inventor of Rigi System of Mountain Railways in 1876 offered to construct Nilgiris Railway on his patented "Rigi" pattern. His conditions were free land, 4% return on estimated cost of pound 4,00,000 and exumption from tax for 10 years etc. This was not accepted by the Government.(from Nilgiri mountain railway websiet)
