The Senate Chamber of the Texas State Capitol still contains the original walnut desks purchased in 1888. Behind the Lieutenant Governor's desk is a portrait of Stephen F. Austin by an unknown artist. It is one of the oldest pieces in the collection, and was painted in 1836. The floor above the chamber contains a visitors gallery that is open to the public.
