Wm Tecumseh Sherman was concerned, the fighting in Mississippi in the summer of 1864 had only one purpose: to protect the railroad which brought food and arms from Louisville and he ordered his commander in Memphis to make a force to follow Forrest to the death if it cost 10,000 lives and breaks the treasury.
