Many memories of this old foot path to school. I walked it many, many times during 1961-1965

  • From my end of Hickam, my sister and I would walk down the cross street to the west entrance of the housing, and then walk on the west side of the paved road before the path curved to the left sort of to the back of the Damon School building. It was probably only a half mile or so, but in Jan during the snow it felt like the Oregon Trail. I will always remember having the long johns, two layers of flannel, and a thick parka with the hood so tight around the head only the eyes and nose peeked out. I have not had the thrill of icecicles on my parka hood since the winter of 61-62. I wonder how many times you and I may have passed each other on this path? Another thing about Damon. No matter how cold it was outside, unless we were having a blizzard, we had to suit up like going to the moon to go outside for recess. I smile today about that, but I thought it was stupid to spend 10 minutes dressing and undressing for a 15 minute recess.
