A round Vermont Barn at the Shelburne Museum

dbeards3 (Premium member) > albums > Vermont, The Green Mountain State

The Round Barn, a signature Shelburne Museum icon, serves as both visitor center and unique gallery space for special exhibitions. The rare 80-foot-diameter Round Barn one of only two dozen built in the state was constructed in East Passumpsic, Vermont in 1901. Round barns, designed for economy of labor, were first built by Massachusetts Shakers in 1826 and re-introduced by a national farm magazine in 1896.

  • One reason for a round church, besides economics, is that in a round church, the Devil can't get you cornered!

  • I am a Vermonter born and raised now livining in Florida. Seeing these picts of Shelburne Museum is like being home. The museum was a mandatory class trip in elementary school and later a leisure trip for my older brother and I every other year or so.
