The primitive abbatial was erected (9th) on top of a Burgundy hill called "Eternal Hill"; Sacred in 878 by Pope John VIII, it was already a pilgrim destination as it enshrined St Madeleine relics; Then it became the starting place for many pilgrims to Compostelle & Jerusalem; On March 1146, Cistercian Monk St Bernard, famous Clairvaux Abbey, (considered as the most important Christendom Chief), called brightly from here for a second pilgrim to Jerusalem in presence of King Louis VII.
