Bananas do not grow on trees, but on large, bush-like plants, 4-9m high. A compact mass of entangled leaves forms a "trunk" that shoots up from the rhizome. The "trunk" dies after bearing fruit once. The next crop grows on a new shoot that springs from the rhizome. After 6-9 months, a bunch of ten or more overlapping "hands" of 18-25 banana "fingers" grows out of the trunk.
