An early settler of Kimmswick was Captain George Washington Waters from Massachusetts. Waters was appointed Jefferson County Surveyor, and because of his position, he was able to purchase a large portion of the land grant from the LaBarge grant on the courthouse steps for $20.00. It was from Waters that Mr. Kimm purchased land on October 4th, 1850. Kimmswick was founded by Theodore Kimm in 1859. Theodore Kim was a native of Brunswick Germany. He named the town after himself, combining Kimm
