Aigues-Mortes doit son nom aux temps lointains ou la ville n'existait pas, ou seuls les marais et les etangs appeles les Eaux Mortes agrementaient le paysage. En1240, Louis IX (St Louis) voulant un port en Mediterranee, choisit ce pauvre village qui appartenait aux moines et en fit une forteresse. Il offrit aux habitants de nombreux privilèges pour les garder aupres de lui (aucun impot, du sel a volonte...). Il fit construire : une route pour traverser les etendues d'eau et y placa la Tour Ca
