This magnificent marble structure is the symbol of Side ('see-day' meaning pomegranate), an ancient trading port which has been significant in this part of the world for more than 2000 years ... the Apostle Paul came from Tarsus, just 100km or so along the coast, and he may well have seen this sight as a young visitor or as he later sailed along this coast on his missionary journeys.
