Many hundred years ago, the Sienese decided that they would hugely expand their Duomo as a point of pride against the other Tuscan cities, and started to build these huge retaining walls to make the long arm of the current Duomo the short arm of the new one. The Black Plague stopped these ambitions plans before they got very far, but they left up the walls they started. Great story, huh?
