San Gimignano, like many other smaller cities, was mostly "closed for the holidays" - i.e., so that Northern Italians can take January off and go to Southern Italy or Sicily where the weather is infinitely nicer. This makes January a nice time to visit if you hate crowds, but made it tough to get a hotel and lunch from time to time. The early morning silence here was spooky.
