Though the Maccabiah is very much a social event, an opportunity for Jews to get together, some first class athletes have taken part in the games. Legendary American swimmer Mark Spitz began his career in the 1965 Maccabiah at the age of 15. The great American swimmer Lenny Karyaelburg competed on the 2001 Maccabiah, after winning Olympic gold medals. Both Spitz and Krayzelburg arrived to the 2005 Maccabiah and joined sailing with disabled children through Etgarim association.
