The cathedral was meant to be a "sermon in stone" which could be "read" by an illiterate population. The arched doorways of Notre Dame clearly fill this instructional purpose by illustrating Bible stories, from Eve's  first reach for the apple to frightening images of eternal damnation. Here we have one of the three portals of the west front depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary (Portal to the Virgin).
